Are there fake dealer exclusives??

#1

Post by AdamI »

Hi guys, I'm brand new here (I've recently been bitten hard by the Spyderco bug) and I've been trying to get my head around the different makes and models. I recently bought a crucarta pm2 which has made me want more (lots more!) and am now exploring sprint runs and dealer exclusives. I've found a purple g10 and dlc cruwear model on ebay for a pretty good price.

I'm a bit apprehensive about pulling the trigger because the price is really good, not great but really good.... are there fake dealer exclusives and sprint runs out there??? Or is it a pretty safe bet going for a new in box DLT exclusive?

I'd really appreciate any input from those in the know.

Cheers, Adam.

If there is a good product then there are fakes. There are a lot Spyderco fakes out there, some pretty good ones. It is part of the risk of buying off ebay. I have not idea how to identify a fake but someone else on here might.

There are fakes of a ton of exclusives.

Edit: I haven't seen fakes of the purple dlt exclusive.

Ebay, Amazon, estate sales, your best friend who doesn't know any better--there are lots of places where you might come across a fake. Sometimes the knife is in the possession of someone who knows it's a fake, other times not.I have found that there is a price for comfort, for knowing you have the real deal. If that is paying a few dollars more, then so be it. That price is small compared to the headache you'll have (as well as the $ you will be out or have to spend to straighten things out) if you get a fake. I would go to DLT or some other authorized dealer over a private seller on Ebay every day of the year. And don't think you can reliably discern a fake just by looking at a few pics from a seller. Sometimes you can (assuming you are well versed in knowing fakes from the real deal) and sometimes you cannot (regardless of how well versed you are). Best of luck.

Are you asking if the DLT exclusive is legit? If so, then yes it is. They are an authorized dealer and currently have stock of their DLC Cruwear PM2 exclusive. That is your best bet while they are in stock.

***Edit - I somehow jumped over the "found on ebay." I still say go straight to the source on this one.

Welcome and congratulations on your first Spyderco, and an amazing PM2 at that. There are some fakes on ebay for sure and they can be hard to tell. That said, I have bought 2 exclusives off eBay which were legit (I'm pretty sure). If you want to, you can post the pictures here or on the fakes section of the forum-- we have some good eyes for that.

As far as for the DLT PM2, I second Jeff. Would be senseless to take any risks on the secondary market while this exclusive is still in stock from the exclusive retailer. Even if you see it a few bucks cheaper somewhere, for a new collector it is worth paying the few bucks for peace of mind. https://www.dlttrading.com/spyderco-par ... wear-blade

I haven’t seen many exclusive fakes, if the steel and scale color matches with correct paperwork and box. Then probably real. Note any real ones will be increased in price substantially on eBay. I have bought many from 3rd party and you just have to be careful and research. Make sure box label matches knife. Check description for errors. Stay away from production models from eBay and Amazon. Compare to factory pictures.

I appreciate the insight from you guys and I'll be able to keep an eye out in the future but after checking the listing more closely I realised the price is a starting bid price, not a buy it outright price.... so there's a good chance it's a real one but rather than go through the rigmarole of bidding on a knife that might be fake I'm going to wait and find one from a legit dealer.

I appreciate the input. And this is the exact pair I'm chasing, something about the cruwear and pm2 combo makes it feel like a perfect user knife but it also has that slightly rare and exotic collectors appeal too.

I've been a casual collector for a while now and never really got into Spyderco, there was always some framelock flipper that would catch my eye first.... I've really been missing out.

I bought an Ikuchi on a whim a couple of months ago and I just loved it, then I got the pm2 and i love that too.... it's made me excited to try even more.

DLT Trading is the only legit dealer of the purple PM2 as it is their exclusive to sell. Still in-stock as of Sept 16, 2022

I'm assuming the one you're seeing on ebay is the auction which has 6 days left. To be really honest, I wouldn't expect it to go for "good price" dollars. Looking at the prices on sold auctions for these, I doubt you'd save even $20 from new. I'd go buy a new one.

Edit: I should also point out that ebay charges me around 7+% tax, so it's ending bid + tax + shipping in most cases.

Yeah, I think that's the one.

I ended up ordering from DLT and it turned out way cheaper than any of the ones I saw on ebay. Like I said I'm brand new to this so I didn't know DLT consistently dropped new runs of some exclusives. My understanding was if you missed out you had to find them on the secondary market.... but I'm starting to understand that's for the latest and most in demand ones.

Thanks, I've ordered one from them.... turned out both cheaper and easier than getting one from ebay.

Yeah, you’re not going to save much, if any, money going to ebay. With tax and (usually) shipping, the best you can hope for is to break even. Exclusive prices are generally about as good as you can expect at any given time. Much better to support the dealer with the expectation that they’re going to have what you’re looking for now and in the future.
