I seriously still don’t get it. Use my thumb anytime and all the time.
Nothing wierd about it, just easier for some people I suppose.
I broke my thumb years ago so the knuckle is twice the size of my other. I cant thumb flick. Middle finger,,,, look out!

I agree with the wear and tear arguments, and while I enjoy mastering the flick, I too hate the sound of the tang slamming into the lock face.
It’s more of a ceremonious thing, I flick it until I master it, making the knife mine. Like cutting myself, just more intentional.
For backlocks and slipjoints I cease flicking once I can middle finger flick predictably. And repeat it once in a blue moon to check that I’m still the worthy owner.
For CL’s the bar of true ownership is typically set a little higher. Five finger challenge is where it’s at. Otherwise same as above. One and done, and checking once in a while that the mojo is still there :)

It's ok that some people dim the lights and speak with quiet reverence when removing their treasured Spyderco from their silk trousers.
Personally, if my hands have dirt on them, the knife is gonna get dirty. If a tree branch needs to be hacked, the blade will get scuffed up. If I feel like flicking the knife open, I'm gonna flick it wildly. If the knife gets all floppy from wear, then I'm gonna call up and say, "Sal! Your knives are weak!" But thus far, there is no indication of undue wear on even my oldest Spyderco.

I managed to flick a Native 5 lightweight a couple times with a lot of hand/arm momentum to back it up. Many failed attempts in the encounter. Subsequently returned it because of it being ridiculously hard to open. I guess I'm not a back-lock person, compression and ball-bearing locks for me please.
