@GSG9 I fear you are pretty spot on and you are probably checking the same shops as me.

The CF scales are grippy enough for almost any use outside of the most extreme. You’d think the scales were oiled glass with they way they are described.
It has slipped on me once. I would much rather have jimping on the blades finger choil and above the spydie hole (which would make it less a gentleman's knife), but since I'm not going to add that myself, I can improve grip with a scale swap perhaps...

Ahh, yes, the Kapara. One of the (very) few Spydercos I still carry and enjoy as it predates 'the great para-fication of choils of 2020/21 and ongoing'. I'm also solidly in the 'grippy enough' camp. Pictured below one of my favorite carry combos.

On paper, the Kapara seemed a perfect knife for me, and I do like it, but as others have said I found the handle a bit slippery. I recently put on a set of denim micarta scales from RGT and it's improved things from my perspective. The Kapara's become a favorite carry now.

Thanks to JRInFL for the tip on closing the knife while holding horizontally.

My Kapara is probably my favorite Spyderco of all, nice materials, excellent action, comp lock, plenty of length but doesn't hog pocket space like the Manix and even Paras. We definitely need more Kapara variants, it's probably the most underserved design in the lineup.

I actually have no clue about grippy enough or not... No hard work done with mine for now. So I guess grippy enough. Still, I want to order some RGT micarta scales for it... Then always hesitate when I see the shipping costs and think about the taxes lol.
As others have mentioned, it also carries very nice, the package is just great.
I really hoping that this whole sprint run/para limited editions/quick buck mentality will fade soon and there will be more focus again on expanding on a solid base of designs including the Kapara.
For me it remains on of the best custom based production models and Spyderco model overall.

brj’s picture makes me want to buy a second one. Such an excellent design and execution.

Good idea bump here. Almost thought when I read that, maybe I had made a secondary account in here and made the post myself haha! :thinking :winking-tongue
Any further Alistair Phillips collaboration designs would be awesome, as well as a new tool steel flavor for the successful Kapara!
Going back to Caly.

Also bummed that I sold mine...
Now there aren't any good deals to be found anymore in Europe.
Also giving up hope for the smaller or the slipit version.

The Kapara is a great slicey knife that works well for most of my needs. I woild like it to be a bitt bigger so it better fits my hands.....and as it already has CF scales it only needs some S90v to make a great sprint run. Couple of years ago Alistair showed a full TI Kapara custom which looked amazing.

Oh man, would I ever jump on a Kapara sprint or exclusive. I'd be thrilled to have even a tenth of the material diversity of my PM2 collection in Kaparas. Carrying my standard production model today at the office, as I have essentially every day for "office carry" since it arrived in December. For my hands, I would also embrace any kind of size-up of the model, but realistically just focusing on materials: I would be into almost anything... A tool steel and G10 or micarta, S90V/etc. with CF or Ti scales... any of these would be an instant hit and I would be singing about it from the rooftops!

Think I've decided to move on for now. I just wish I could remember why I sold it. If I could hold one I'd probably remember. I'm guessing it could have been the compression lock vs. my fat index finger. :smlling-eyes

I had one but sold it. Lot of great features. However, the lock was hard for me to release and aftermarket linen micarta scales didn't help with that. And the spydie hole was too small for me to easily spydie flick. So, hard to close and not fun to open = Sold. Just one dude's experience. YMMV.

I don't have those gripes with it, I'm a fan of the action on this model.
But... maybe you just described why Alistair had made this model proto as a slip joint. There's another thread somewhere on here that has some photos of his handmade proto. Beautiful design. And would save you your hassle of having to try to operate a lock you can't figure out.
