Moldy Block?
Moldy Block?
My wooden Knife block in the Kitchen started to grow mold out of the bottom of it. Yuk! I scrubbed all the knives(cheap ones) with bleach cleaner then ran em through the dish washer. Now I need some way to store the knives. Anyone have any ideas?

First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Cool thanx.
Ghostrider- Oh I like that one! Missed it the first time around.
Severed thumbs- I think I might get that one next summer when I re-model the Kitchen. It outclasses the current set of kitchen knives I have.

Civilian, perhaps these knives to go with the new kitchen?

Since I'll be hanging all the cabnents, installing the flooring, installing the dishwasher, sink, & stove myself to cut down on the cost, those knives are a little on the high side.severedthumbs wrote:Civilian, perhaps these knives to go with the new kitchen?

Nice overreacting I must say :) . Just putting them in boiling water for about 15 minutes should be enough to kill any common household mould. Also, five minutes in Dettol, or an hour in an autoclave are good to do the job.Civilian wrote:My wooden Knife block in the Kitchen started to grow mold out of the bottom of it. Yuk! Hm, Dettol would've made them smell bad. Alot.
Unfortunately, they don't. I did a search for it a while back and it was a single piece of art. There was talk on the internet that it might be put into production (I believe by an italian company). As always, maybe time has passed me by already, and they have become available. My search is about 6 months old.
Civilian: In order to kill the current mold, you can use boric acid (available from CVS). I found it works very well. Just put on plenty of the powder and leave it for a few days or a week (and keep away from children and animals). after that you could put on a couple of coats of polyurethan. Goes on clear and drys pretty quickly (you can usually apply two coats per day, at 3 coats upwards you get ultra high gloss, if you sand the coats in between with fine 320 sandpaper). After that, the block should be impervious to moisture.

I figured the trashcan was the best place for it. I had reciently moved to the other counter by the sink, guess it gets a little wet there. The next one will go back by the stove, across from the cutting board oh well.
