Gunting Story

#1

Post by smcfalls13 »

At this point it almost seems redundant to point how great this knife is, but I feel obligated to share it, and the sheer luck it took to get one, if only for entertainment.

I've been looking for one for about a month online, and I emailed countless sites, including the usual suspects NGK and JFJ (I was pretty sure that a dealer that well known wouldn't have any, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try), inquiring as to whether or not there were any left. As you can imagine, every answer was "sorry we don't have them in stock." Nevermind that most of these sites still had the Gunting advertised on their sites  which is just frustrating.

I even tried a few local knife shops, of which there aren't many, and they had a minimal selection of spyders to begin with, let alone a discontinued, highly sought after model.

I'd been watching Ebay as well, but I wasn't holding my breath for an affordable Gunting, since they've been getting a little pricey. But the Gunting gods must have been smiling upon me last wednesday. I logged into Ebay for my daily check to see if anything had come up, and lo and behold a NIB PE Gunting popped up. To make matters better the Buy it now price was $98, right where I was willing to pay. On impulse I immediately bought it, despite that I probably could have gotten in lower if I had just bid normally, but I didn't want to let this one get away. Fast forward to this morning :D

I now have in my possession a PE 440V Gunting
Its also numbered, which I didn't notice until I got it. Not a big deal, but pretty cool for me because I don't own any numbered knives other than the WTC.

Just thought I'd share that story with everyone.
Now if only I knew how to use the knife properly...

Thank you all.

Sal- Videos huh? They should prove much easier to get than the knife itself, thanks for the heads up, I think I recall seeing them amidst my search.

As for pics, I'll have to use the camera phone, I don't have a digital camera. So I'll post them as soon I as I can.

Congrats on *your* C68!

I just recently got one out of the good graces of Hannibal lecter :) !

The C68 is an awesome...*tool*. There are SO many "things" you can do with this one, a lot of which we were already doing with our Enduras and Police models, but this C68 has *added benefits*... ;)

Keep us posted on your thoughts regarding your Gunting!

God bless, and what # is yours?

Michael- Thanks for the link, I'll have to pick up at least the first volume to keep me busy until I can save up some extra money.

Daywalker- So far my thoughts on the Gunting are that it is just plain awesome, simply based on construction(this thing feels SOLID)more details will follow I'm sure, as I get more acquainted with it and its capabilities. Oh and its numbered 883. Not exactly a low number, but again, its just kinda cool to have a numbered knife. :D

Of course now I find myself wanting to get another one, god save my bank account if I do.

IMHO the Gunting is the perfect folder for SD. I don't see anything better than this one. The handle is a lot bigger than the blade so it make a good balance.

I'll have to ask for one for Christmas :D

Holsters

#14

Post by smcfalls13 »

Ok, after trying to carry it today, I've reached the conclusion that it does not want to ride in my pocket, or my waistband. Its far too awkward in both, and it practically opens on my fingers trying to pull it out of my pocket.

I know that I can get a holster or a sheath for it, can anyone point in the right direction?

Oh and Daywalker, I was wrong, it wasn't numbered 883, it was 863, I just needed to open my eyes a little more.

Thank you.

Another request for a holster, here... :o
I am paying off a Gunting and should have it within two weeks, if all goes well.
At the knife shop I'm buying it from, the guy didn't want me to put it in my pocket, well OK, I can see that someone might do that and run off. I pulled out my three EDC's, and put them on the counter, then asked "now can I see how this fits?".
I found the same thing when clipped to RF or RR. It didn't feel right, and I was pretty sure that if I ever grabbed it without being careful, I would get chewed on. As a SD knife (actually SD tool, since it can be used effectivly without ever opening it), it would need to be deployed very quickly (or worst case, not at all if jumped with no time to do anything but defend). I believe that the Gunting -can- be a great SD tool, but if the timeing is wrong, or it becomes too dangerous to even try to get it out of my pocket... , then it would be best left alone. I will have to get the training videos, and probably find someone to train with, a dummy, or both at the same time :D (kidding).
I can see the need to buy the trainer Gunting and the video to be the most effective with this knife/tool. Training from Braum Frank would be best, but doesn't seem realistic to hope for, let alone have the $$ for. Maybe I'm going too far, but the reason I wanted this knife/tool was to be able to use it in a non-lethal way, if possible. To do this, I think it will take the investment in a trainer of the same price as the "live" Gunting, and instruction, a little over $100.00 for the video; more for live training.

But, to solve the most immediate problem, can anyone point me to a good holster?
Thank you,
---Tom

I don't think you'd have gotten it any cheaper with a lower bid. I have not seen a Gunting go for <$100 in quite some time. Nice score!

I think in about 3 years we will all wish we would have gotten a couple of extra Bram Frank Gunting C68 Spydercos while they could be got. Unfortunately I think the Gunting will be a knife which will be much more appreciated now that it is out of production. Just like a few others i.e. JD Smith, Shabaria, C-54 Calypso, Lil Temperance, Impala and any of the Bob Lum collaborations. Like the old Joni Mitchell song says " you don't know what you got till it's gone".

I seriously doubt if that one ever comes back either. At least not the same as the original  :spyder:

Aloha smcfalls13!

Cool! I got #848! *We're* closely related! :D I hear ya on the carry method...I have managed to carry it "okay" in a pair of denim shorts, but like I said before, make sure there is nothing else IN that pocket except your C68.

Sheaths: Hannibal Lecter should be here to answer that shortly. If not, try looking on BladeForums, USN, or http://www.cssdsc.com.

Appears we're going through this *Kinetic Kool aid* trip together! :p

God bless

Mmmmm.....kinetic kool aid. I hear its highly addictive. Do they have twelve step programs for that? I doubt I'd get past step one, I don't have a problem ;) I've been carrying it all day in my pocket despite the finger risk, and I took your advice Daywalker about having nothing else in that pocket. It rides just a little better, but getting to it is still hazardous to my digits.

I've seen a couple of holsters for Guntings online, but figured I'd check with the knowledge base here first.

I'm realizing now how lucky I got, theres another Gunting on Ebay now, with 6 days left to go, thats already up to a little more than I can afford after my last purchase. Good luck to whomever wants that one, I'm tapped out at the moment.

Good luck to all in their hunting of old Spydies

FYI - Company that Makes/Sells Gunting Sheaths

If you are still looking...

The gentleman on this website is the owner and maker of sheaths for River City Sheath here in Ohio. I have spoken to him at a Middletown, OH gun and knife show and he did make (and show) belt sheaths for the Gunting. I do not have any of his Kydex sheaths personally, so I don't have any first hand knowledge of his products; I just use the largest belt sheath I can get my hands on for my Gunting. Not necessarily the best long-term strategy however, as the special protruding part of the blade ends up eventually tearing up one side of the nylon sheaths I use. Good luck.
