Name frame-lock Spydies with improved lock-faces
If you have a Spydie frame-lock whose titanium lock-face has been hardened (CQI or originally) by carburization or steel-insert, please name it.

The Knifeworks exclusive Military (C36CFTI) comes to mind. Mainly because I regret selling it, that was a mistake.

The Sage 2 and Spydiechef are both carburized I believe.

CQI, do you imagine? I bought both early on and the wear on each lock face is significant.Brock O Lee wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 12:59 amThe Sage 2 and Spydiechef are both carburized I believe.

Swayback has a steel insert. Brouwer and Advocate too (coming my way soon)
I bought both a SpydieChef and a Chokwe.
I remember reading a very much waited answer from Spyderco on the SpydieChef lockface.
Michael Janich came in the thread to transmit the Taïchung plant's answer :
My Chokwe was bought second hand, really not much use but the guy still managed to scratch the blade deeply in a couple of times. The lockface looked nice when received, and rapidly changed (a spot getting deeper and deeper at each openings) before stopping to deteriorate all together. That's why I can't say for sure. If the Ti wasn't heat treated (carburization) at all, I think the lockface would never have stopped deteriorating.

Thank you for your patience regarding this topic. We have been in close communication with our Taiwanese makers to understand their exact manufacturing and processing methods. Since the language difference is obviously a complicating factor, we wanted to make sure we understood everything clearly and accurately before we shared our findings.
The discoloration of the face of the lock bar is mild oxidation that results from the heat-treating process of the titanium scale that includes the R.I.L. lock bar. After the scale is machined, it is heat treated and the entire surface of the part displays some degree of oxidation. The face of the lock bar is then masked to protect and maintain its as-machined surface and the rest of the scale is bead blasted to achieve a uniform matte finish.
That's it. Thank you again for your continued interest in Spyderco products and your patience with our process.
Stay safe,
Mike

In the collection : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Does anyone know if the McBee has a carburized lock face? It doesn't really matter for me but mine has literally zero lock stick, and is easily the smoothest-opening liner or frame lock I've ever used.

I had the opposite experience, not much movement on either since new. I flick them open but not obsessively.wrdwrght wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 9:58 amCQI, do you imagine? The Sage 2 is near on 10 years old, and was my most carried (and used) knife for a number of years. Lockup is still at 45% and hasn’t moved.
The Spydiechef took it’s place a few years ago. It is the CQI version before the black hardware. It moved from 75 to 80% and stopped.
Two isolated data points, I know.
I remember seeing pictures of the Spydiechef’s heat treated lock face on this forum.

It's in the thread I linked, an interesting one. And it shows a bit about how Taïchung processes their Ti RIL without steel inserts.
