- For me there exist several "If there was no X, I´d certainly own Y (or MORE of Y)" models
Examples:
- "If there was no Chaparral, I´d certainly own a DFly" (... but as it is, for me the Chap is even a bit better in the tiny knife arena)
- "If there was no Stretch 1 (at least I still have five pieces), I´d certainly own several Stretch 2" (but as it is, I slightly prefer the "1"
- "If there was no Stretch 1 / Endela, I´d certainly own more than just one Manix 2 LW"
Do YOU have "If there was no X, I´d certainly own Y" models?
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)
If there was no Caribbean, I'd certainty own something. The question is, what??
If there was a clear alternative, I'd probably already own it. I probably already do, it's likely my Autonomy.
I might have bought a SE wharnie Endura by now. Problem there is I don't love the handle, so I'd need some custom scales or something to change the grip feeling. Then there's my issues with ricassos.
I would even say the Caribbean and Autonomy have me covered so well that you could just about put any comparable knife in the second part of that sentence because every purchase I make is compared to those two, so unless the new knife is bigger or smaller or has a steel I haven't tried yet or is just something very different like the Ayoob, I probably don't own it because of those two knives.
Oh, if there were no Spyderco knives I'd certainly own more Kershaw/Zero Tolerance knives. How's that?
If there were no pocket knives in general I'd certainly own a running and driving project car in my garage instead of a chassis and a bunch of parts.
Ok seriously, I think if I didn't have a Caribbean or Autonomy, I'd probably be carrying a Shaman. It's definitely my favorite model design of the last few years aside from those other two. I'm still waiting to see what the choiless Shaman looks like if it ever comes to life, but until then if I'm going to have a finger choil then it has to be a good one and the Shaman is pretty much perfect.
if there were no salt series, i'd probably still be buying kershaw assisted flippers and i'd have way less knives.
the salt series (pacific salt, specifically) brought me back to spyderco. it brought me up out of cheep, chinese assisted flippers that now feel like junk to me, and started me on the path of growing a modest (around here, anyway) collection.
if there wasn't a manix, i may have bought a shaman. i had one in my hand when they were still new and much cheaper. i liked it alright, but it didn't fit my hand as nicely as the manix and was still quite a bit more expensive, even though it hadn't skyrocketed yet. i may have picked a pm2 or para 3 instead though. now, i'd never buy a shaman.
If there were no Spyderco, I’d probably have a few more SAKs, ESEEs, and LT Wrights.
But there is a Spyderco.
So, wanting no more agitation than what the world is now throwing at us, I’ll not play a counterfactual game with the numerous Spydies I have chosen with care.
Neither do I care anymore to rate my favorites. Sal’s mantra, “All good, just different”, works for me.

If there was no Salt 2 wharncliffe, I would probably own multiple Delica wharncliffes. I see and these wharnies and know I'd love them, but I ultimately don't feel like giving up the weight, little extra blade length, and Lc200n things the Salt does.
If there were no Manix's (es)(s)(i), I would probably own a Sage 5.
My first 2 Spyderco knives! BD1 LW Manix and a CF/G10 Sage 5. Similar, yet so different.
I have a hard time with this topic though, I think mainly because I already have the knives that would take the place said prior knife. So I guess if there were no Manix, Shaman, Native Chief, Military or UKPK (my top 5 Spyderco knives) it would depend on where I was at the time during this journey of finding those to be my favorites.
Early days (I've only been a knife person for like 10 years, a knife NUT for 5 years) I would have been fine with Kershaws, those were my gateway drug. I then likely would have been interested in Benchmade Knives because of a friend at work that showed me what better quality knives were like.
These days, if there were none of those knives were available I'd likely have a lot (or a few) more CRK's or small fixed blades. Funny how things change...and for the worst for my wallet!
If I didn't care about knives, I likely would have stayed in the car modding hobby which is also extremely expensive...but I wouldn't have all you great people to talk about my hobby with on a daily basis. So I'll take this route
If I didn't have a bunch of Pacific Salts, I'd have a bunch of Enduras. If I didn't have a Waterway, I'd have an Aqua Salt. If I didn't have a Caribbean... I'd wait for the Leaf Jumper.
If there was no Delica, I'd have ended up with a Griptilian for my first "good" knife. Those were my top choices at the time, and I ended up going for the Delica.
Because desolate places allow us to breathe. And most people don't even know they're out of breath.

In my case it was Delica vs MINI Griptillian as my first "good"/quality knife... and I ended up getting both, but eventually only keeping the Delica.

If there wasn't fairly loose knife laws id probably own the UK pk by now...
Dude, you should get one anyway. About the most comfortable carry there is, especially IWB. Thin, light, scales not as grippy as Dragonfly, Delica, Salt... Pretty cheap, too.

Actually I should too...
I mean, I love really light, linerless FRN Spydies, and I most likely would always grip the UKPK with a finger in the choil anyway, which makes a lock much less important imo..
I think in my case it is just that in Austria, my home country, one can carry whatever knife they like, while pretty much in all the surrounding countries they can´t.. and so I guess I am silly enough to "think" that if I CAN carry a locking folder of any size legally I just HAVE TO make use of this opportunity, no matter what.. just silly, as said...
