Sage 5

#1

Post by CAD »

It’s time to purchase a Sage 5 from Spyderco. I’m having a hard time choosing between the CF/G10 and the LW! Would you fine folks help me with this? How do they feel in hand, etc?

I got the LW for my wife - the texture of the FRN is great. Unless you want that more elegant look of the CF, I would say go for the LW.

LW all the way. Last I knew it had the CQI pivot bushing and the CF did not. Also, better feel in hand IMO. Take it from a big fan of the Sage :)

The Sage5 LW continues to be the best implementation of a compression lock I have ever had... Super smooth action with perfect tolerances, no lock stick, and that extra angle on the lock tab is a little touch that makes a big difference.

As Matus said, The LW has the bushing for sure. And it is one of the only compression locks that was tuned to perfection from the factory.
But eh, maybe the original Sage 5 has had the same improvement since then ! I personally love Spyderco's CF/G10 laminate.
The only other I received and got caught with the mouth opened for 5 minutes was the Yojimbo2.

The Sage 5 CF/g10 is a thing of beauty in both form and function.

But the LW model certainly has holds its own, the action is fantastic.

If weight is an issue at all then the LW is your answer.

Seconds on the LW. It's perfect in hand and the lock and bushing make for excellent action.

I would go with the CF/G10 one. It looks nicer for sure. The difference in weight is negligible and I don't care much for the pivot bushing. I don't play with my blades and I would rather have the option to tune my pivot not to mention that unless the tolerances are very tight that bushing could turn into a blade play source. I own both and I like the CF/G10 one way more but... to each his own.

I think the LW is the better choice as far as the action is concerned. But then, a few days ago I came across my Sage 5 with CF/G10 laminate and I have the action dialed in pretty well on that one. I remember that it took a little messing around but it's pretty darned good as it sits right now. So it's kind of a toss up for me. Bang for the buck the LW is the one. For something a little nicer the CF/G10 laminate is the better choice. I don't think you can go wrong with either

Love the lightweight. The grip sells it for me, but with the bushing, there is no fiddling with the pivot screws to get the right adjustment.
The CF/G10 has a little more "hefty" to it, if that is what you want. The LW is still plenty strong (doesn't feel cheep).
