NASA50,

I’m glad you came back to let us know how you liked your Sage5LW. The Taichung knives are really something special. Enjoy it in good health.

Glad to read that this forum has resulted in a positive buying experience, NASA50.
And as others have said, kudos for remaining open minded.

It's not surprising that many people are initially put off by the Made in China (whether ROC or PRC) labels.
So much cheap junk comes out of there, that we're conditioned to be wary.

But this has less to do with the local companies' abilities, than with what we're asking them to produce. Can't have something dirt cheap without sacrificing the quality. Be a demanding customer, however, and the output quality will follow... as well as the price. It's all about, supply and demand, trade-offs which the customers are prioritising.

The Spyderco products go on to show that with proper sourcing and quality control, great products can be had from these places. And there are other examples : flashlights, phones... ROC and PRC produce, at the same time, some of the junkiest as well as the best products on the market.

My most recent EDC has been the Para 3 ...with the Native 5 as the number 2 EDC.

Well, that changed today. To me, that Sage 5 LW is very similar to the Para 3 in Size and with the same Compression Lock - which is my favorite. But for some reason, given my hand size/shape - I find the Sage easier to open than even the Para 3 ... and definitely easier to manipulate the opening than the Native 5 and the back lock.

So now, I have a new EDC - the Sage 5 ... everything that want in my EDC ... perfect size, slim, light, compression lock, nice blade shape.

The only thing that I would change is a black blade ... and a coyote brown or OD green handle !

Thank You again Forum members !

Hey NASA50,
Glad you like your Sage 5. It's probably my favorite LW Spydie.
Agree about needing a DLC/TiCN coated blade. If Cutlery Shoppe does a Sage 5 LW in orange with TiCN, i'd be all over it.

My first Spyderco from Taiwan was a Spydiechef. It's a beauty, and I'm very happy with it. Next, I need to get my first Spyderco from Golden. Just 'cause you can be a real Spydie guy without a knife from Golden. :beaming-face

Well, if you remember, after heavy persuasion by the Forum members, I recently purchased my first Spyderco made in Taiwan - a Sage 5 LW. As you know, upon receiving it, I was very impressed the Sage 5, so much so that it replaced my Para 3 as my EDC. Even further than that, I just bought another Sage 5 G10/Carbon, again with the Compression lock that I am most fond of !

Thanks to this forum - I am now a Taiwan Spyderco super fan !

That’s great! Congratulations! After you have it a while you should post a comparison thread and tell us which you prefer and why. Seems like a lot of people, myself included, have gone back and forth on which flavor they should order.

Congratulations on your second Sage 5, NASA50.

I bought my first Taiwan model in 2018. It was either the PPT or the Southard.

my first taichung spyderco was the squarehead lw. not really a piece for judging fit and finish, even though it's great. i followed that up with a caribbean, which continues to amaze me every time i hold it, which is quite often. after that came the spydiechef and ikuchi. both are really nice. the manix is still my favorite knife, but it's hard to beat taichung for quality.

i really want a sage 5 lw. it's funny how we all had to convince you to try a taichung spyderco and now you're making me want one.

:rofl

OK, so my second Taichung Spyderco was just delivered by UPS - a Sage 5 Carbon/G-10.

As you may remember, I was extremely impressed with my first Taichung, the Sage 5 LW.

Well, the new Sage 5 Carbon/G-10 leaves me speechless.

First, I have already eaten my words on the Taiwan made Spydercos - the quality is second to none.

But, the Sage 5 carbon/G-10 may be the "prefect" Spyderco ... if someone now asked me if they could only have one Spyderco what would it be, well I used to say the Para 3 (or 2), but now I would have to say the Sage 5 Carbon/G-10.

Again, Bravo to those forum members who convinced me to try a Taichung !
