My First Spyderco made in Taiwan
My First Spyderco made in Taiwan
After hearing from a multitude of Forum members about the high quality of the Spyderco's Made in Taiwan, I pulled the trigger today on a Sage 5 LW - after it became available on the Spyderco Website Store.
I wont have it in my hands for a few days, but this is first-hand evidence of the influence/value of this forum, as without the members input, I would have never considered a knife made in Taiwan.
Thank you for broadening my narrow mind ! ... (however, I still have a way to go ... as I am still not a fan of the Chinese made Spyderco, nor any knife made in China for that matter) ... sorry ....
Thank you,
NASA50

Re: My First Spyderco made in Taiwan
NASA,
I share your sentiments with Chinese-made as much as I possibly can.
My first (and so far, only) purchase from the Taichung factory was the Maxamet Sage 1. Hands down, on par with the best Spydercos coming out of Golden, as far as tolerances in fit, finish and action. Can't say for certain, but it feels like the Maxamet out of that factory is run a bit harder than out of Golden... at least in feel of sharpening, compared to my Maxamet Native.
Anyhow, I'm sure you will be pleased in the quality and with the design!
Cheers.

I wouldn't worry about the Chinese-made Spydercos. A lot of folks feel the same as you, regarding China. And there are so many great Spyderco options from Golden, Taichung, Seki, and Maniago!

Of all my Spyderco knives, there's just something special about my Sage 5.
Delica 4 VG10 - Dragonfly 2 K390 Warnnie - Chaparral CTS-XHP - Native 5 M4/Rex/45/4v - Para 3 CTS-BD1/Maaxamet/4V/20CV - Lil Native - Cruwear - Sage 5 S30V - Jester 4V
Re: My First Spyderco made in Taiwan
Chinese made Spydercos are still Spydercos made under the strict guidance and specifications of the man himself. All this anti-Chinese made stuff is an insult to his judgement, political, or simply prejudice. I'd wager that the people Sal works with are mostly regular guys like you and I and who are simply doing their best to put food on the table for their families in spite of a repressive regime.
Re: My First Spyderco made in Taiwan
i'd like to try the sage 5 lw. looks like the perfect edc. the only reason i don't have one is because it's too similar to my manix2 lw to be high enough on my list to snag. i really like the super smooth action of my caribbean (same lock and factory). i've only heard great things about this model, so i'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Re: My First Spyderco made in Taiwan
Do you know one of the problems in today's world, if you happen to have a differing opinion, some people are quick to brand you as "prejudice" !
My preference to not buy Chinese is not; an insult to Sal, based upon Political motive or Prejudice - so please do not be so quick to slap that brand on me.
I spent a career trying to ensure that the people of the United States had a right to their own opinion - so please keep your insults to yourself.
P.S.- I currently have at least 35 Spyderco knives and have given my closest friends about half that many ... I do not think Sal has a bigger fan.
I do not know why I keep posting on this site - it seems like for every kind and thoughtful comment, I get an insult ... I do not know why some people can not keep their rudeness to themself ... I guess it is too easy to hide behind your computer and shout insults from a far ... sorry

My words seemed to have been deemed as malicious towards the Chinese and sal/Spyderco, which they were not intended (and I don't believe represent that in their brevity, anyway).
I'll sway from the side of politics, as that's what this accusation is assuming; of which I'm sure we all have our feelings towards such subjects, anyway.
As an American, enough of my money goes towards the manufacture of Chinese-made products. I support plenty of Chinese families by buying everyday goods, among other wants, for myself and for my family. I'd like to support "regular guys like you and I" who reside and have to put food on the table for their families within other countries, as well.
Still not sure how and what this has to do with sal's intellect as a person, or businessman. I can form an opinion based on what I have come to know of him through my interactions with him here (among other discussion forums) and through the success he has had in being in business, though I cannot say I know the man himself on an intimate level to judge him based on his personal beliefs and manners regarding these things.
Seems like some repressed feelings going on here based on assumption, rather than fact; though I won't cast judgement. Have a good rest of your day, skeeg.

NASA,
While I appreciate your effort in securing our Freedoms that we are graced with, insults, I suppose, too, would count for an opinion.
C'est la vie, my friend. Stick around as there is much more than political judgement cast here within these forums.

It’s ok to have an opinion - even those differing from our own - that is everyone’s right … it’s just some folks need to be able accept that someone has a different opinion - without the need to insult or belittle them for having the different opinion …
An insult is not an opinion or a view … it’s a comment made with malice

I've always had good luck with the quality of my Taiwan Spydercos. My Ronin 2 feels like one piece the scales are blended in to the tang so well.

If you don't want other people's opinions on Chinese Spydercos maybe you should stop bringing it up repeatedly?
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

I, for one, would be sorry if you quit posting. I've enjoyed hearing your perspective since you joined, and admired how you jumped right in with interesting viewpoints.NASA50 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 6:35 pmI do not know why I keep posting on this site - it seems like for every kind and thoughtful comment, I get an insult ... It is a bit smaller than the Manix2. For me it occupies a different niche.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 6:31 pmi'd like to try the sage 5 lw. looks like the perfect edc. the only reason i don't have one is because it's too similar to my manix2 lw to be high enough on my list to snag. i really like the super smooth action of my caribbean (same lock and factory). i've only heard great things about this model, so i'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I actually enjoy hearing other Forum members opinions regarding Chinese made Spydercos ….
What I do not think necessary is being told that I am insulting Sal and being called Prejudice simply because I do not care to own one …
If posting my opinions regarding a knife - invites and allows for open season on personal insults, I give up on this forum

Re: My First Spyderco made in Taiwan
Not to disparage any of the other Spyderco factories, because I’ll take a Spyderco from any of their factories before I’ll take nearly any other factory produced knife…. But the Taichung and Golden factories do seem to be producing knives with the best fit and finish, as well as tolerances.

Re: My First Spyderco made in Taiwan
The Taichung knives are very good. The Chaparral had a bit of a glitch on the first run. They weren't bad, but not as good as they became. Since then, every Taichung model I've looked at has been the best.

Thats just the nature of the internet. It wont matter if its cars or power tools or anything else. I wouldnt lose any sleep over it.NASA50 wrote: I actually enjoy hearing other Forum members opinions regarding Chinese made Spydercos ….

I also wouldnt give up on a forum with thousands of people because of what a few might say.

Prejudiced, not prejudice.
