Halpern Tek-Wood Scales?

#1

Post by fixall »

Hello!

I hope you are all doing well today!

I posted this in the Mule Team forum too, but this part of the forum tends to get a lot more traffic, so I figured I'd post it here too.

I currently have a couple sets of Halpern scales for my Mule Team knives. One in contoured Burlap Micarta, and one in contoured G10. I absolutely love the Micarta scales, but am not the biggest fan of the G10 scales... Honestly, I'm just not much of a G10 fan overall really.

I'm looking at picking up another set of scales (and will probably sell my G10 set). I am looking at either the natural Canvas Micarta, or the Tek-Wood scales.

I imagine the Tek-Wood scales are going to feel and perform like Dymondwood/Dymalux/SpectraPly/ColorWood/etc... But I'd really like to hear some feedback from anyone who has a set of the Tek-Wood scales.

If you happen to have some pictures, all the better!!

Thanks!

Those look fantastic! Your pic has me leaning towards the Tek-Wood over the canvas Micarta. :)

How do they feel in your hand? Any comparison to other materials?

I have used Pakkawood for a long time now, and tried other eversions by other manufacturers.
All made in a similar way, and the resin smells different in each type.

I have not used Tek-Wood, as I have too much of laminated wood anyway. The checkering makes perfect sense!

My favourite is Jabroc, used for aeroplanes props in WWII, and used today under different race cars for skidplates...

It is used as a gauge which restricts the minimum ride height attainable by the car. The closer the car is to the ground, the more efficient the front wing and rear diffuser. The higher the down force levels, the faster a driver may corner. Cornering loads can push the car down much lower to the road, which can be dangerous and so the skid block was introduced to counteract this. The thickness of the plank is one of the parc ferme tests. If it is found to be worn beyond the allowed limit the car is disqualified.

I went ahead a picked up a set. I figure I have plenty of scales in paper/linen/canvas/burlap Micarta, why not live a little, lol.

OP, I know you have some Tekwood scales coming. Hopefully they will work out for you. I had some from Halpern and sold them off quickly. They just felt "cheap" to me. YMMV.

I figure if worse comes to worst, I can just sell them off and go back to tried and true Micarta. :)

The Tek-Wood scales came in the other day. I am very, very pleased with them. :D

Excellent color (even a bit of chatoyance!) and excellent quality.
