REX45 and Maxamet
REX45 and Maxamet
Hi......I'm brand new on the forum. I must confess I've only been a Spyderco fan for a few months, and it was the magnificent selection of blade steels that has me now obsessed with Spyderco. My two latest cravings are REX45 and Maxamet, and I've noticed they are quite difficult to find via my normal sites, e.g., KnifeCenter, BladeHQ, DLT, SMKW. How do you manage to get word of an upcoming drop? Is that info freely passed around this forum? When/how do you you folks learn of pending new drops or Sprint Runs? Thanks.
Re: REX45 and Maxamet
Welcome! Follow the stores you mentioned on social media and read this forum. Ive never missed a drop in 6 1/2 years of following this forum. Bladeforums for sale forum and ebay are the best places to find knife drops you missed out on but you will pay more.

Re: REX45 and Maxamet
Maxamet should not be that hard to find, since it is regular production.
Can't go wrong with either of those steels!

Welcome SpyderVol.
Most all the new drops are discussed here before the drop. Members will usually see a social media post by one of the dealers and share. Since I'm not on social media, I rely on others to inform me, and I rarely miss the drops I'm interested in. Just keep on checking the forums or sign up for social media updates from the dealers.
REX45 were sprint runs and most are gobbled up. Maxamet is a production steel and can be found with patience.
Buddafucco (Beau) and RamZar do a great job keeping folks apprised of dealers with inventory in stock, as well.

Re: REX45 and Maxamet
Maxamet Paramilitary 2s are indeed scarce right now, but as a production item more will show up eventually. Currently REX 45 orange/blue Paramilitary 2s still show in stock at Cutlery Shoppe's website, and they are about as fair a price for a PM2 in that steel that you are likely to find at the moment. If I recall Cutlery Shoppe is releasing an orange/green version on the 28th.

Re: REX45 and Maxamet
Welcome to the forum! Both are great steels. I have a rex45 manix in my hand right now. One of my favorites
Re: REX45 and Maxamet
Both are great steels but they are very far apart in some performance characteristics. Rex45 is my favorite right now. Maxamet might be hard to find, S110V is pretty close to the performance of Maxamet and much easier to find.
Re: REX45 and Maxamet
Not sure what model you're looking for, but knives ship free has Mxamet versions of the Para 3, Native 5 LW, Sage and Manic LW.
https://www.knivesshipfree.com/search.p ... ry=Maxamet
Knives plus has all of those in stock minus the Manix, but plus a modified Para 3 with Ti scales and an acid washed blade that's pretty pricey, but kind of cool.
https://www.knivesplus.com/searchresult ... ld=Maxamet
Anyway, just a few examples, the Maxamet knives are out there because, as someone else mentioned, they are production models, whereas Rex45 is only available in exclusives or sprints.

Welcome to the forum! :)
As others have said: REX 45 Spydies all were sprint runs (as far as I know)
If you want REX 45: A model in that steel that did not sell too well (compared to other REX 45 sprints of course) was the Manix 2 LW (not the G10!)
It should be the "easiest" to find for a not too crazy price.
It is also the only model I personally have in REX 45, and I really like it!
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

Re: REX45 and Maxamet
I agree! It is my favorite and I think the best knife model to make use of the qualities of Rex45. I consider mine to be my "work knife" for when I'm working in my worksop.Wartstein wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 11:48 amIf you want REX 45: A model in that steel that did not sell too well (compared to other REX 45 sprints of course) was the Manix 2 LW (not the G10!)

Actually I prefer longer cutting edges, but somehow I grab my REX 45 Manix most of the time when I have to do some spontaneously occurring cutting tasks at home, as long as it is not about cutting stuff with rather large diameter.

Re: REX45 and Maxamet
Unfortunately (for me! And I guess I am in the minority concerning this) though with a coated blade. Takes a lot away of the "character" of REX 45 (how it, though really slowly, shows patina and "age").

Maybe he meant Rex 121?

Re: REX45 and Maxamet
Thanks, Sir. The reason I said it was possible he was thinking of Rex121 is that is one of the only steels I know of that's even crazier than Maxamet for edge retention.
Most of my EDC stuff is stainless (S30V,35VN,45VN) or semi-stainless (D2), steels. I have some CPM M4 but I tend not to daily carry, though I recently picked up a Benchmade (Super) Freek that is definitely going to see some pocket time. But I worry more about potential for corrosion and lack of toughness in the Maxamet PM3 I picked up more than any of my other knives. It is more of a special occasion knife, just as I would treat a Rex121 knife if I can manage to snag something in, as they both are hard to work with so they usually have limited availability. So I tend to associate those two steels in a similar group and thought maybe the OP was also thinking of those two similarly.
For other high edge retention stuff I have an S90V Osborne (940-1) from Benchmade and an S110V Manix, plus several knives in M390/20CV knives from Benchmade, ZT and a very recently acquired Watu. I worry less about those not due to price, but in how hard they would be to replace.
