Using Lubrication

#1

Post by pjrocco »

A co-worker told me a different way of lubing up my knives.

Not sure if you all do this or I'm just slow. But usually I just put like 5 drops on all the moving parts of the knife and then flick it a bunch of times. Seemed to work fine.

Well he told me to empty a one ounce bottle of Militec-1 into a tupperware bowl and just throw the whole knife in there so the whole knife is covered. Let is sit for about 24 hours and every now and again pull it out and flick it a bunch of times.

Anyone do it this way?

If so, what is the best way of cleaning the FRN?

Thanks in advance!

That is not reallt how Militec is supposed to be applied.

better off disassbling the knife. Throbing the blade in there. taking it out. taking a the blow dryer and drying it and repeat 3 times. The reasemble. Then drip the Militec into the Pivot.

or just loosen the Pivot and sqirt the Militec into there and open and close it a few times.

That is what i do,(not the disassembly./

I would say that is a retarded way to lube your knife.

There was a similiar mentality I heard about several years ago, CASE knife collectors were putting their knives in small bags, filling them with Grease and then using a vacuum sealer to seal up the package. I have a friend that did that and after couple of years he dug a few of his knives out to trade..... he found out some things;
- One of the knives still had spots on an interior liner.
- The knives were almost impossible to get fully clean, nor was the action the same.

MORE of a good thing is rarely better.

That doesn't seem like the best way to lube a knife. It also seems very expensive and a waste of militec. Militec is supposed to be a precision lubricant, and applied in droplets. It's not meant as a bath for your knife.

So Rock, I find myself wondering whether this fellow would advocate throwing a rifle into a tub of 10W30 :D .

OTOH, try cleaning a rifle packed in Cosmoline. Used to be done that way, that's how my M1 was issued. Took many hours to clean it. I don't know what the army uses to preserve its firearms these days these days, but I hope it's easier to get clean of than that stuff.

Mineral Oil

I read a thread or two on the use of Mineral Oil by The Deacon and Daywalker, tried it and it works great. I love the fact that you don't have to worry about ingesting Miltec or W-40 if you decide to prep food with your :spyder: using this lube...plus it comes in handy if you're feeling "irregular" :) .

Militec

Post by Manifest »

After cleaning your knives, you only need 1 or 2 drops of militec. Work the knife a bit then heat up the pivot/militec with a blowdryer.

The only bad thing I find about militec is that it gets kind of messy and leaks out a bit the next day.

Just catching up here and a little late for this party too but I would think lube on knives is the same on firearms, a little goes a long way. Too much lube attracts dust and grime in huge amounts.

Speaking of this, I put a drop of Breakfree on an FRN handled knife and I swear it's melting the FRN. Now of course it's not, but you should see the black, tar like gunk I'm pulling out around the the lock area when the knife is closed. I'll try some MilTec soon.
