Sharp thumb hole fix ?

#1

Post by S-3 ranch »

I used my salt2 hard today, and needed to open and close it 100’s times, and dog gone my thumb is sore as blisters, so what’s the fix? When give away or sell this thing and buy a pacific salt ( bigger is better for a task knife)
And have the same issue I need a fix so I have a comfortable work knife .
I got pretty tough ranch thumbs, and don’t have this problem with my other spyderco knives.

Use a Sharpmaker rod or something similar to break the edge. Don't go too far or you'll find that your thumb slips off

Sharpmaker rod, sandpaper wrapped around a pencil, small metal file...just file down the rim of the thumb hole. It doesn't take much.

Sharp Guy beat me to it...
So it goes.

I assume I can polish the jimp slightly also? Which rod is best?

I sharpen mine, I like them nice and crisp. But, I did just overdo it a little on a knife and I found if you put the end corner of a Sharpmaker rod into the hole they fit really nice and you just twist the rod a couple times and it's very easy to dull it down to your liking.

I wouldn’t use anything other than a tough ranch thumb myself.

I did that on my first Stretch, but haven’t found the need since. I could definitely see doing it if you’re opening and closing that much though!
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I have Spyderco knives with sharp edges and I bought a Lansky 3-sided Diamond Pen ($17.99 smackeroo's) to take down the edges. I am satisfied with the results: the edges are just sharp enough to catch, and no longer shave my fingernails.

Cheers and all the best in 2022 and beyond.

Roll some 400-grit sandpaper into a cone shape and very gently break the corner. Do not overdo it, opening action suffers. After screwing up one, I leave em sharp as they come.

I take a sharpening rod from my Sharpmaker or from another sharpener and hit the hole a lick or two and that does it. Takes literally seconds to do.

The Seki-City Spydercos frequently come this way in my experience. Haven’t experienced this out of Taichung or Golden. A fine sharpmaker rod fixed up my RockJumper just right.

After the Seconds Sale, my thumb hurt for days. Must have opened and closed hundreds of knives that day.

No kidding! A coworker of mine had the same complaint about his right thumb after the 2019 Seconds Sale. I chided him by saying, "Switch hands, Mike. That's why god gave you a left hand." :winking-tongue

I think I'd leave it the way it is. Whoever you give it to may say, oh I like it better that way, or I won't be using it that much. You can be up front and tell them it may bother them and offer to break the edge.

The cone approach works for me.

I actually used a cone shaped Dremel tip. Not on the Dremel tool--just worked it by hand until I had the feel I was looking for.

Like others said, sandpaper or a ceramic rod. I’ve gotta round off the hole on pretty much every spidey I get.
