Metropolitan?

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

I seem to remember Sal saying something to the effect that the Urban LW was supposed to be ~ 2.5" bladed, but due to a manufacturer mistake it came finally in at 2.61". I seem to remember that he intended to have a knife called the Metropolitan that would have a 2.65" blade. Does anyone else remember that?

Now that the ULW has gone to 2.5" I wonder if Bro Sal is about to sneak a 2.65" Metropolitan in on us? And, I wonder what it will be like? Does this seem right?

Hi Doc,

With some digging I found this from the thread “Is the Metropolitan still on hold Sal ?”

We'll keep an open mind, but we'd have to shorten the Urban blade to do so and many like the Urban blade like it is.

Yes, and now the Urban has been shortened.

Here is the other one I was thinking about:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=77887&p=1211661&hil ... n#p1211661

"Hi Doc,

The original design called for 2.5". 2.6 was an error. If we leave the Urban at 2.6", then there will be no Metropolitan at 2.75".

Indeed it has been shortened to the dismay of several forum members. I’ve picked up an HH Urban and noticed the truncated blade (personally wasn’t a big deal).

Will be interesting to see if Sal et al. are willing to pursue another design that’s 1/4” longer than the latest Urban. As a user I’m not sure I’d notice a 1/4” difference, but law enforcement in my jurisdiction would. 😐

I have a full understanding for guys to be a little upset with the Urban being made short by 0.11", but at the same time I doubt that Spyderco is going to introduce another model that would be nearly identical and had a blade length 0.15" mode than the proposed Metropolitan - that would probably some confusion for the buyer.

EDIT: Maybe keeping the Urban at its original length and offering a grind-to-2.5" service could work :winking-tongue

I’d still love to see the Metro.

Will get some more mileage out of this comparison pic:

The Mertropolitan would presumably use the (hopefully still existing) Spy-DK molds, which would substantially lower the initial cost to bring it into production, help differentiate the model from the Urban, and slot it in nicely between the Urban and UKPK.

Insert cool European steel and maybe bring back BRG for the scales. I’ll buy at least two.

I would be very happy indeed to see this, or the SpyDK with a proper Spydiehole.

Didn't it used to have one? I have the SPYDK without the thumb hole and it is a great knife. I really like it. What mine needs is a dimple like the Roadie has.

There was the DKPK with the hybrid dimple/thumbhole.

So the urban in the s90v form (slightly shorter blade with more curve in the edge) is the "correct" form?

I think it was the original intent, or something close, based on what Sal has said. I don't know about the greater arc to the cutting edge, though. The manufacturer apparently made a happy (for us) mistake and made the blade longer. It hit the sweet spot, though now it seems they are back to the shorter blade in the original spec.
