Spyderco Mouse vs Blade Tech Mouse

#1

Post by Andkatz »

Is the VG-10 steel used in the Spyderco Mouse better than the SV30 steel used in the Blade tech version. The Spyderco seems to have a stronger wider clip mounted lower but those seem to be the only differences. I found a new Spyder Mouse but dont know which to get. Thanks

Go ahead and get the BladeTech model, and let me know where to get the :spyder: . I'll retrieve it to prevent your temptation. :D

Well, in a perfect world, there would be a US made S30V :spyder: version of the Mouse with G10 scales, dual liners, and ambi clip mounting. Unfortunately for us, that's not in the cards. Do not own any Blade Tech products myself, so cannot comment on their quality. Assuming it is decent, and assuming you're buying it to use, rather than just as a collector's piece, you have to decide which features mean more to you. IMHO, both steels are excellent, so it's pretty much of a toss-up there. I prefer the :spyder: round hole, but if I wanted a Mouse for a user, I might very well decide that the G10 scales and forward traction grooves on the Blade Tech version make it the more practical of the two. From a collector's standpoint, it's the Spyderco, hands down.

I thought I read somwhere that the Blade tech mouse was made by Spyderco (could be bad info) and that the Blade Tech G-10 model and Carbon fiber model were made in the USA and the Mouse lite made with 440-c steel was made in Japan.

I'm a Spyderco fan, but in this case I'd go for Bladetech's. VG-10 is good, so is S30V, but I preffer G-10 linerless over aluminium. Not very fond of that pear shaped hole (it should have been round IMHO) ;) but you can't have everything at the same time. :o

Theres a Spyderco mouse on Ebay right now, if you're feeling ambitious.

Item number: 6541614937

Its NIB and ends in less than 2 days. But due to my lack of knowledge of discontinued Spydies, haven't got a clue as to its value. I said if you're feeling ambitious because it looks like there's a bidding war on it. I've been watching it for a few days to try and educate myself a little about potential value, and it has passed between the same two buyers. I've bidded in auctions like that, and my pride got in the way, and my wallett ended up taking the beating for it. I won, but kicked myself afterwards.

Anyway, sorry to rant, the point of this post was just for informative purposes, for those who are more knowledgeable than I.

And if someone here is one of those bidding. I apologize, I was just trying to be helpful, just PM me and I'll keep my mouth shut next time. :o

The one on Ebay is the one I was looking at. I guess the secret is out. I was going to stop bidding when it reached the price of the Blade Tech model which is probably soon if any one is interested. Otherwise I will probably get the Blade Tech since I will be using it (not for a collection) and the G-10 offers a better grip. Anyone own this knife and have any comments?

Blade-Tech as a user

#9

Post by bancu »

It could be my preference for G10 but as a user, I like the Blade-Tech version much better. The aluminum handles on the Spyderco produced Mouse are just too slippery for me.

Blade-Tech is Wegner's company and the quality is there.

Unless you're obsessed with steels (or being built in America), don't overlook the Mouse Lite. It's 440c and it's FRN handles are old style Spyderco G10 like (a bit smoother than the newer G10).

Functionally, the Blade-Tech V-hole works just as well for me for opening.

Now what would I like to see on the Blade-Tech version...the UK Pen knife wire clip.

So 440C is still a quality steel? how is it in comparison to S30V? The mouse lite seems to be a good deal at $37.95

440C is a fine working steel. The mouse lite is also FRN, but nice texture still. Get one just to play with, but it's a good working piece too

Blade Tech Tops

The Blade Tech Wegner Mouse II in G-10, S30V is my edc (in an urban environment) and is an example of superior quality in materials, craftsmanship and ergonomics.

It is a small blade with a wide sweep and takes a little extra time to sharpen but holds and edge.

My one preference would be a blued clip or wire clip as the existing clip stands out like a shiney beacon.

They make a FRN model if you dont want to spend a c-note.

I'd prefer not to descend into steel discussions since it really goes way beyond just a 'model' number. This is just one of many threads that you will find if you search on steel related topics:

http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15692

If the Blade-Tech Mouse Lite looks good, why not start with it? If the design works for you but you find you'd prefer a higher-end handle or different steel you can always move to a pricier version. I'm sure you'll be able to find a taker/home for your old Mouse Lite.

Pleasant surprise

At the BLADE show I stopped at Tim Wegner's BLADE TECH booth and purchased his "Hunter EXTREME" with Carbon Fiber handle. It is so much like the one he did for Spyderco but with space age improvements. I am telling you that to tell you that you can't go wrong with any of MR. Wegner's blades. No disrespect meant for the Great Spyder Factory at all meant here. Quite the contrary I wish Mr. Wegner & Mr. Glesser would get back to the drawing board for another Spyderco/Wegner collaboration.

Both companies have super products. I just missed a Mouse on Ebay buy $10. DARN IT!!!

What did you think of the BladeTech serrations? I haven't handled one but, from the pictures, they don't look like they'd be as effective as Spyderco serrations?

Can't say

The Blade Tech knife I got was the Carbon Fiber Extreme Hunter. I don't have any serrations on mine. I kind of wish that I would have gotten a combo edge but the plain edge was all he had in this particular knife at least the stock he had at the BLADE show anyway. I was really impressed with all of his products. I am still very much mainly a Spyderco collector at heart but I have an awesome amount of respect for his products. Albeit I am quality minded person and tend to gravitate in that area. JD :spyder: O

Can't remember the exact amount, but I bought like 6 of the mouse lite in the 440C last december for xmas gifts. I decided to keep one for myself and give it a test run at work.

I cut about four pieces of cardboard and the knife went dull. At the time I wasn't as good with a sharpmaker as I am now, but I couldn't get an edge on that thing at all. Bladetech did grudgingly take back the unused knives though. I was going to ebay the one I had used, but decided instead to throw it in the trash. The overall quality of the knives was not impressive at the price I paid. I coudn't give these knives away as gifts. Bought five spyderco crickets that went over real well instead.

I had experience with other bladetech products and the quality and support has been excellent, but I would pass on their mouse lite.
