Non-Stainless Blade Models From Spyderco

#1

Post by me2 »

Are there any models that have blades other than stainless steel that are recommended? I realized I don’t have any non-stainless blade models. I’m interested mostly in steels that aren’t PM steels.

Im sure people will recommend k390.

Sounds like what you want is one of the sprints in 52100. I wish they would do another run of these.

K390 and XHP are definitely “other than stainless” and they’re some of the most recommendable blade steels out there. Once you start considering steel qualities other than stainlessness, it opens up a lot of great options.

EDIT: just saw the non-PM stipulation. Any particular reason for that?

Weren’t there a few with stainless laminated on Super Blue or similar? Those would also be fine for this list.

K390, V-Toku, Super Blue, 52100, HAP-40, and a number more. K390 and HAP-40 are still in production in the Seki line.

Hi Me2,

K390 is non stainless, but it is a PM steel made by BU. I think you will like it. Exceptional edge retention, but being non stainless, it does require paying attention to avoiding corrosion.

For non stainless ingot steels there was Super Blue, 52100 and Vtoku2. The Cruwear Mule was also an ingot steel. All the rest that I can think of are powdered tool steels like M4, Rex45 and K390.

The Super Blue sprints were a long time ago and are quite expensive. The 52100 and Vtoku2 were more recent and can sometimes be snagged on the secondary market.

Are you looking for a simple carbon steel? Why? Sharpen-ability? Edge stability?

Just don’t have a non-stainless carry blade right now. I’m not totally against PM steels. I have not had the best of luck with the high vanadium PM steels though. XHP seems ok and I will look into the K390 as I understand it will be used in the High Performance Delica. M4 would be on too. 52100 would be ideal if there is any out there.

Missed all the 52100 releases mostly because I hoped a UKPK was coming. Been half-heartedly looking for a 52100 Manix, but they seem scare these days and go fast when they go up for reasonable prices.

Bentoboxshop still has the 52100 Military sprint, but it’s not cheap.

Hi Me2,

The Hi performance Delica will be VG-10. K390 was too hard to do a high hollow.

Unfortunately the High Performance Delica will not be in K390.

Kinda sorta from what I can see. More than the tool steels but less than others. Resistant but not proof.

And it's a steel currently used by Spyderco so that's a plus. No point in picking an alloy that's not in the catalog.

I was more focused on looking for non-PM steel. Kind of a going in both directions request.

That’s ok. I like VG10. I still want a HP Delica.

There’s nothing wrong with stainless. I just realized I don’t have any daily blades that aren’t. I just got a new knife in 14C28N that seems to work well and I was looking for a similar non-stainless blade to go with it. The new knife isn’t a Spyderco. My kids got it for me. Uncultured swine.

I have spydercos in Superblue, Hap40, vtoku2, k390 and M4.

Of what's in production today, I cant recommend the Gayle Bradley 2 enough. It's an incredible knife that I think works great with M4
