Authenticity check

Hi there,

I've recently become a big fan of spyderco knives (currently own a Spydiechef, Chaparral FRN and Manix 2 Lightweight Maxamet) and in my quest for a new purchase a have come across a PPT. The price seems reasonable, however the logo and lettering on the blade are quite faded while the seller describes the blade as hardly used. Would this be a normal appearance on this type of knife? Could there be any issues with authenticity?

I can't say for sure, as your photos are very small. Any chance you could upload them at a higher resolution?

However, what I noticed was that the Spyderco logo is not present on the pocket clip.

Here are what the lettering on my PPT look like. Mine is also a light user.

Also, the Spyderco logo on the blade should have an almost 3D etched texture, as most Taichung models do.

As for the logo on the pocket clip, I've looked into a quite a few images online and my impression (could be wrong though) is that the first execution in G10 didn't have the logo on the clip. The later versions in CF all seem to have the logo.

Did they polish the blade? Possibly using Flitz?

Hey Bizzarini, glad to see you scored a PPT!

I imagine someone trying to counterfeit this knife would fail miserably. I refuse to believe they would match the pattern machined on the scales accurately. The machined pattern might seem random but it is identical among all PPT models and yours matches other authentic examples.

I'm confident saying this is an authentic Spyderco PPT Perrin. I really hope you enjoy the knife! (It's my personal favorite!)

One day I took extreme closeup photos of a couple of different blades and I noticed that the bug symbol is created differently on different models. I wonder if this could be a fingerprint type thing that could identify if a blade is genuine or not.

I would think it's possible, as long as Spyderco keeps track of which logo pattern corresponds to a specific model.

It looks pretty legit to me. I don't know if any of the cheap guys would bother going through all the trouble to copy the PPT. There are some semi-complicated production methods used to make it. Most copy-cats would probably be very obvious.

I love the PPT, have two originals and one Sprint. I might be able to find a lanyard (not sure how long I would have to look).
