A Dream Come True!

#1

Post by zatch »

This past weekend I flew out to Colorado to stay in Breckenridge for 3 days with a buddy of mine who is about to get married and 4 other guys for a Bachelor weekend trip. We are all from Tennessee so it was a big deal just to get out west. When I looked at the map for our weekend of traveling I saw how close Golden, CO was to the airport and I thought “Cool! We’re going to be really close to SFO!” I figured my dream of getting to pay a visit was off the table because we had a pretty packed weekend planned, so I kind of let the idea go. As it would turn out, we had to check out of our AirBNB early and had time to kill before heading to airport, so I mentioned going to SFO, and my buddy who is getting married is also a gear head (more into cars and guns) obliged and we put 820 Spyderco Way into the GPS.

I am the only one of the 6 of us who had any interest in going, and, in fact, visiting SFO was a huge item on my bucket list. As it would turn out, everybody in our group (non of them knife nerds like I am) was so impressed by the facility and the collections display inside the store. We walked around for a while and I felt like a little leaguer meeting Babe Ruth, my palms were sweating and everything 😂 I’ve been looking for a Chaparral for quite some time now and have never been able to find one, so when I saw one at SFO and put my hands on it I just HAD to buy it. For whatever reason I just love the ergonomics and the purpose of that knife and wanted it in my collection so bad. Turns out, I bought the last one they had in the store!

We hung out for way longer than anticipated, reading all of the cool history posted around the store and checking out the cool one offs and special editions they had displayed. Beside my dream purchase of the Chaparral, three of the other guys in the group ended up buying their first Spyderco knives that day, including the groom himself and our token Army Ranger, who the staff treated EXCEPTIONALLY well in honor of his service.

The trip to SFO made me so thankful for the knife community, and I’m still so excited that three of my friends started their Spyderco collection at the HQ itself. Spyderco, THANK YOU for being you and for the influence you have in creating knife enthusiasts and stoking passion for the knife life. You guys are the best!

Awesome to hear, it’s on my bucket list as well!

What knives did your boys pick as their firsts?

Great story! I'm trying to find my way to Golden at some point myself. I'm a little leery because I'm not sure I'd ever leave

So awesome! Before I discovered Spyderco, I lived about 25 minutes from SFO for like 5 years. But I didn't get into Spydercos until I moved back to Missouri. Now I kick myself all the time that I missed so many years of visiting SFO!

Zatch, glad you had the opportunity to make it to the SFO. Like JuPaul, I lived near Golden for years but only discovered the SFO in March and have dropped in weekly since, much to my wife's dismay. It is so nice to get to see and handle all the various models to help decide if it is the right purchase to make. The staff is always great, super helpful, and more than willing to share which are their favorites and why.

Zatch,

Welcome to the Forums.

Yes, it's a real treat to be able to see so many of the Spyderco knives and accessories under one roof. And the crew there in the store are always fun to talk to. Candi has quite a collection and at any one time she's got a few of the older discontinued knives on her desk. Unfortunately, at this time the inventory is kind of low. But it's always nice to be able to hold a knife and see how it feels in your hand.

Pretty solid choices for starter knives!
