close call

Post by Irish Lager »

today at work a customer borrowed my meerkat se to cut open a package. i looked away to grab somthing for him, and he said this knife is really dull, (its not at all) when i looked up he was using the back edge to try to cut the package open and was just missing his hand with some really hard strokes. i quickly told him to turn the knife arround and then he sliced right through the plastic pack like nothing. if his and would have slipped he would have most likely lost his thumb. learned my lesson, never give a stranger a knife, let him hack his hands up w/ his own.
just thought id share a little story with you...

Man, it takes all kinds. I though this was going to be a bit on him not being able to close it but it could have been tragic for him. Good thing you weren't too far away!

Aloha GuideSeries!

So...he was using the blade spine to cut with? What's the policy on doing UA testing at your place of employ

As GC said, good thing you were close by!

Speaking of Crickets. I use mine everyday but I won't lend it to anyone. I am afraid I'd lose it! Mine has the PE and FRN handles. Best small knife I've ever had and I've had many.

Hi GuideSeries,

I was in your store today. Kind of hard to just drive by without dropping in.

Boy, what a nightmare that would have been.

GuideSeries, I once handed someone a custom Rob Dalton switchblade with a 6"blade called the Pronto...he press the button Ok...then tried to push the blade back into the handle, his hand went for a slide down the blade cutting his whole hand open to the bones..was not a pretty sight...never handed another person a knife after that...I tell them, "You can look but don't touch"...Thanks for this important post, more people need to read this type of post as a reminder, and save others from injurying themselves...A knife with a blade is like a loaded gun...you wouldn't hand over a loaded gun to anyone would you...Doc ;)

I dont get it, do some people not know what the edge is and what it is used for?

wow I guess this stuff happens at the same time... my buddy opened my military using both hands and the very tip of it bit the webbing inbetween his thumb... just a paper cut... he's a close friend so I told him that once they get a taste for blood they can't stop....

these people are obviously used to handling butter knives, and look for the same edge on other implements.

Many people are used with the traditional look of the knives, so if you give them say a wharncliffe, it's quite probable they'll use the spine, even if the handles have finger grooves. I've noticed many don't even give a glance at the blade geometry or the edge, all they consider is the blade shape. :o

I got a little story like that one... My sister once borrowed my Ti salsa and when the job was finish she just close it and throw it to my girlfriend who wanted to see it more closely. But since the lock isn't perfect (sorry but it's true), the knife's open during the process and my girlfriend caught it by the blade, cutting herself badly...

Now I always give a little warning before letting someone use my blades!

Wow, so many people have the same story. Suprised it happens so much.

Same thing happened to me about 2 months ago.. Guy at work thought the Calypso Jr. wasn't that sharp, so he ran in against his palm. Needless to say, he found out how sharp it was, and missed 3 days of work because of it..

You mess with the :spyder: your gunna get bit!

I ALMOST understand trying to cut with the spine of a plain edge knife but a serrated Meerkat would take a special kind of stupidity, intoxication or blindness. If you own a Meerkat, just try to hold one in a position to "cut" with the spine. It is very difficult for me to do much less conceive that someone could be this thick.
