Something to say about that $307 Massad-->

#1

Post by Mo C »

I think the reason some of you guys felt the price was amazing is because it was too amazing... I think there was a misunderstanding about what the seller was actually selling.. The seller starts off his description by saying he got a bunch of new old dealer stock; he names several different makes and states that he will be putting them up on Ebay over the next few weeks... To the left he posts an image that shows several pics of the same knife. Of course from a few different angles but actually when some people read the first part of his text and looked at the multiple pic images; I think they didnt read on clearly enough to realize that the guy was only selling 'one knife'...

I may be wrong but when I went back to Ebay to Advanced search and clicked on completed Massad Ayoob Knives; there is no 'history of that auction. If somebody can find it; please post a link to it so I can check it out again... Ifffffffffffffffff you cant find it then what I think happened is after the auction ended and the seller contacted the winning bidder; further dialogue probably allowed the buyer to realize that he was just bidding on one item and he prolly wasnt too thrilled about that... If Ebay possibly recognized the auction was unintentionally vague(which it wasnt to me since I always read the text thoroughly and ask sellers anything I even feel might be a valid question about what exactly I am bidding on); then the bidder could/would withdraw his winning bid and the transaction would be dead and the Auction history for that particular item would not show up in completed Items listings....

I havent checked ebay tonight yet(just got home about 15 minutes before I started typing this post) but I did notice a few days ago somebody that prolly saw the high dollars on that 307 auction; went ahead and posted a Massad Ayoob clipit stating how rare and such and started the auction at $275; looking for another fish born in the same 60 second period. As of this morning(last time I checked) the auction had been going for at least a few days and had yet to get one bid....

I see nothing wrong with collecting Knives and paying a pretty penny for some really rare and or beautiful knives; but I dont think the Massad clipit has reached the level of importance yet. I just happened to lose my Massad knife this last Monday. I had it since the knife was released and have used it in a Collision repair Bus facility on a daily basis. only a work knife for me and I was really amazed when it dawned on me if I wanted to replace my trusty work knife; that another clipit might cost me an arm and a leg; lol...
Although I will probably start and continue to look for another Massad clipit yoyo; because I really do miss my knife; I already went ahead and bought a Spyderco Chinook 2 plain blade; and I just love the knife.

PS if anybody knows more relative details about what actually happened with that auction; I would love to hear the details... Thanks

There are some on ebay at prices far lower.
First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Lost your knife?

#4

Post by BladeGoblin »

This doesn't answer your question, but you lost your knife? I have seen quite a few people mention this in various threads here and on other forums. How does one go about "losing a knife"? I have collected/carried/used knives for some 15 years and in those 15 years I have never been without a knife. Let me explain, I go to work with a knife and use it about 40 to 50 times a day, 95% of the time i carry 2 knives with me, because someone always asks to use one. I am always aware of where my knife is, kind of a habit, like the way you check the time on your watch, I always touch my knife out of habit. Police model iwb right side and usually a classic sebbie clipped to my right pocket. I have about 75 knives in my collection, 40 of those are spyder's. I clip the knife on my sleeping clothes iwb [you never know and I dont own a gun} and go to sleep with it. First thing in the morning I check if it is still with me. I am a very active person, walking, running, some weight lifting etc. I know this is getting long, but I am only trying to make a point, NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE I LOST A KNIFE! I could go on, as I am not sure if I am making a point or not. I am not picking on anybody, but at the same time it does irritate me when someone says they have lost their knife. To me its like your wife or husband going to work with 2 shoes on and coming home saying "oh by the way I lost one of my shoes at work today and cant find it anywhere" maybe it's just me, but I dont get it.

BladeGoblin,

Why on earth do you sleep with your knives? Aren't you afraid you cut yourself in your sleep?

Is Washington really that dangerous?

Let me think, a month ago U.S. marshalls knocked on my back door looking for the next door neighbor who was involved in some killings/shootings. I knew he was involved in drug sales, because he had about 30 cars "visit" him daily, never knew I had a killer living next to me though. Although there have been some slayings in the neighborhood, various break-ins, occasional gunshots at night, stuff like that. I dont live in the best of neighborhoods. Oh and one night 6 months ago a car pulled up to the house next door and fired 3 or 4 four rounds into his car, house, fence and smashed his windshield with a piece of cement. The guy never bothers me, so I am staying out of it. I threw the card away the marshalls gave me, i dont want to get involved. I'm not going to bother getting killed, because of some piece of trash. That may sound cowardly to some of you, but put yourself in my position. I cant afford to move.

for Bladegoblin: HOw I lost my knife-->

Post by Mo C »

The Massad I was using as a work knife(since I bought it some time ago). I work for a bus repair facility. I am a structural welder/fabricator/upgrade modifications technician and the No 1 enemy of bus rust and corrosion; lol...
During the course of any shift; I move alot of vehicles. Normally I have two knives with me; both clipped; one left front one right front pocket; with knife bodies inside the pockets. On June 13th(I work evenings in south central Los Angeles) I was crawling under a bus on my side(no creeper because of space limitations. I had removed the left side knife and put it in my toolbox. Because I was mainly on my side; I got the right knife and clipped it onto my right rear pocket to keep from scuffing the clip on the concrete. I made the first time mistake of clipping the knife with the knife body outside my pants since I keep my wallet in that right rear pocket and didnt want to stuff anything else in the pocket.. Once I conpleted the inspection under the bus; I failed to replace the knife inside my right front pocket.. Sometime in the next hour; I played musical chairs with a few buses and in the process of sitting down in each bus; the possibility of accidentally sitting the end of the knife on the seat as I sat and dislodging the knife from the pocket presented itself. If the knife popped off the edge of my pocket; it would most likely just stay on the seat and not make a sound. During business hours most of the keys are left on the vehicles since they can be moved for a variety of reasons. Any one of a hundred people can move the buses and I cant say we are all pals; we are just co workers; so there is no bond of honesty one way or the other. I would agree with you that almost as an instinctive action I just now and then reach for my knives to make sure they are 'there'... That particular evening I was kinda multi-tasking and just was preoccupied with things other than checking the location of my knives. When I got home I immediately realized I was one knife short and the last I remembered was putting the Massad in my back pocket and instantly realizing how sitting on the buses could pop the knife off the pocket..
As soon as the shop opened at 5 am I called the daytime supervisor(we are old friends) and gave him the heads up on my situation.. Remember also that the bus yard has at least 60 mechanics that are constantly makin alot of noise; so it is possible that I could have partially dislodged the knife and then it might have dropped as I was stepping down off a bus and because we wear hearing protection; I may have not even heard a sound as it dropped to the ground...
Anyway; I have a buddie with the same knife and I got his knife and made a xerox copy and posted it on the glass in front of the service counter.
Besides the staff we have 200 drivers that use the yard to park their buses and since my knife could have fallen anywhere I was on the lot that day; any of them also could have been the one to find it and have no idea who it belonged to???
So far I have heard nothing but since the word is now out and about; whoever found it may actually decide to turn it in at the Service desk..
I am 54 years old and I have carried at least one knife since I was a kid. And I have up until now; also never lost a knife; ever... I guess that's where the 'first time for everything' line comes from... We learn from out mistakes if we survive them and I obviously learned a lesson on what not to do with a clipit knife when I am crawling around a bus.. That knife was like my little buddy and my sadness about losing it has nothing to do with any monetary value. I just loved the knife... Man,, what a bummer,,, the end...

I lost two Enduras. One in the woods planting pine trees. Never found that one back. Lost the second one doing maintainence on a church air handler. To get to the unit you have to squeeze through a tight opening against some fiberglass duct board. One year later I spotted my lost Endura stuck in the ductboard. Squeezing through the opening the clip had stuck in the ductboard and pulled out of my pocket. Haven't lost a knife since I started buying "spares".

Well, at least buy a gun. Man, some night someone is going looking for this bum and walk into your house by accident. Yaa Hoo! The gun is cheaper than moving and a cemetary plot.

Good luck BG!

Ths knife did not sell at $307, as seen:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1

Although, it looks like the seller offered it to the 2nd bidder as a "2nd chance offer", with was accepted:

I don't think people thought the auction was for several knives, just the fact that it's a numbered discontinued PE model will make the price go higher than usual... and remember that you only need 2 motivated people and a pile of cash to turn an auction into madness ;)

Blade Goblin,
Sorry to hear all that. Hang in there. If I was in your situation I would sleep with my knives clipped on too.

I used to carry one specific knife, which often times would come of my RF pocket in which it was clipped. The first time this happened, I took the clip off and bent it to give it more tension so it would stay on my pocket. This didn’t work, it continued to come off, and I eventually lost it. I bought a second one which had the same problem. Like with the first, I was ever watchful for when it would slip off of my pocket. This one lasted longer than the first, about a one-and-a-half years. Talking with various different dealers left me with the impression that that particular brand of knives had a reputation for this sort of thing. That is the only knife I had that problem with, my Endura rides in my rear pocket with no problem whatsoever.

Have in the past “forgotten” that I let some use my SAK or Leatherman. Learned my lesson there.

BladeGoblin,

My neighborhood was pretty bad when I first moved in. I went to the neighborhood association meeting and learned that the sad thing about those situations is that if the neighbors don’t get involved, it doesn’t improve, and often gets worse. Getting involved is a hard choice to make, but the truth is that in life, even if you chose to stand on the sideline, your still on someone’s side and therefore supporting them. Those elements are allowed to exist in neighborhoods because people get intimidated into doing nothing, which in turn allows the problem to exist or get worse. Police can’t fix the situation without the help of the people. I have a friend who moved out of a neighborhood that wasn’t as bad as mine. It will probably get worse now that he is gone. He left because he was tired of being the only one to hold his neighbors accountable.

One of the things I took from that meeting is that if the neighbors show they don’t care by turning a blind eye, it sends a friendly welcome message to the bad element. Doing your duty as a citizen (and it is a duty) is a extremely hard choice for some. My prayers are with you.

I put up a few,' Wanted posters' for my Ayoob Clipit. I used a Plain edge clipit that a friend of mine had bought after seeing mine a few years back.. I put it on the xerox and just ran a few pages and then wrote up the text, 'Mo lost is friend. Please return to the bodyshop if you find it for a good reward'..
One of the daytime guys found the knife and handed it directly back to me and would not accept any reward.... Would not even let me buy him a dinner for the shift.. I am very happy to see my knife again. Actually I didnt realize how much I would miss it and I also didnt realize how much it might cost me to replace it! Lolol.... I do think that one that went for over 3 bills the other day was way outta line... but no matter; since I am saved from bouncing for another at least for now... I like storys with happy endings................. yup I surely do

Price and value are very subjective but the bottom line is that the price is set by what someone is prepared to pay and they ain't making the Massad Ayoob any more.
