Work mat. Are you jealous?

Just got this work mat from a local leather worker here in Denver named Bweiss Leather. Super excited and thought I'd share. Been saving some maintenance so I could use this mat. The wait was worth it. The craftsmanship is superb and he offers a wide range of HIGH END leather products. That smell! This won't be my first purchase! What do you all think?

I normally do my maintenance on my workout bench, or kitchen table. No need to spend extra money on something that's already there. All you need is a flat surface. I've never understood the need for fancy mats that I've seen on YouTube or elsewhere...though I do appreciate the smell of some fresh leather!

I use bondhus torx bits most of the time. I don't have a specific mat or spot where I disassemble knives. Usually just try to make sure it's clean and free of debris. If it's got springs I'll use some type of box so if anything pops it usually gets caught in the box.

I regularly need a place to be able to put set down knife parts and make sure I don't scratch them or loose little pieces. For some reason $3.00 Ti. screws love to jump off the table and hide. So, I got some scrap aluminum and a 1/4" thick rubber mat from Industrial Metal Supply and made myself a work mat. I set all of it in a piece of particle board. It was well worth the couple hours of work.



If I wasn't working on knives all the time I would make one of those leather ones FreeGolf posted because they're helpful and they look fantastic.

That's a picture of a work mat...aluminum and rubber :rolleyes: :p

It is Vanax. The finish is 1500 grit, so it's more of a "fuzzy" mirror . But it's a blade from one of my designs and it has a Spyder hole because it's a prototype. I made that one with a Spyder hole to test the size and location so that I'd be prepared to present Sal with a properly refined final version in case he wants me to submit one for consideration one day. I made another blade for that knife with an adjustable thumb stud to figure out exactly where I would locate a stud as well.

The final version might have a third option.?. :cool: .

My workbench is plywood and I usually just throw a shop rag on it if I am worried about parts rolling away. I have seen quite a few work mats that look very nice, this one included, but for me they are a solution to a problem I don’t have. It would just be one more item taking up space in an already overcrowded multi use area.

I’m usually at my kitchen high-top, or a folding tray on the couch. Paper towels and a plastic yakisoba tray :D
