Help needed..........with some FAQ

#1

Post by UK KEN »

Hello All

I need your help! :)

I am in the process of redesigning my web site and among the new features is a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page. I would be obliged if you could think about what answers to questions you feel would be most useful to people both new to Spyderworld and established knifeknuts.

A list of your top five questions would be very much appreciated. :D

Thanks for your help!

1. Which blade style is best for me? (Tanto, Drop Point, Etc)

2. Do serrated edges have any advantages over plain edges?

3. Is FRN Good? Can you explain to me what it is?

4. What's the best thing I can buy to sharpen my knives?

5. What steel is best for me? Can you tell me what are some different steels and what is good about each one?

I know that some of these are answered here but I figured you may want some of them for your site also.

Great site by the way :)

Cheers,
David

Some of FoM's questions can be answered in the rec.knives FAQs. You can find the newest versions here: http://www.edcknives.com/vcom/knife_knowledge.php

There are a lot of FAQs there. Some of them I have written, some I haven't. Double-check to make sure the FAQ you're interested in is written by me. If it is, and you're interested in putting it on your site, I give you permission to put it on your site, provided you do not edit it, and especially keep the attribution of myself as author. On that page, I'm certain I wrote the Blade Geometry FAQ, the Steel FAQ, the Sharpening FAQ, the Lock Test FAQ (co-written w/ AT Barr), the Serrated vs Plain Edge FAQ. I might have written a couple of the other ones also, you'll need to download them and check the author, I'm too lazy :)

You know what I think would be cool? A F&Q based around stuff like -

How do I move a clip?

How do I adjust a pivot?

Maybe there could be some diagrams or pictures to go along with certain knives since some pivots and clips are different from others.

You could also go into stuff like -

What is a "spyder drop"?

1: What is the rarest of the rare sydercos? (available to the public)
2: How do I get in a collectors club?
Flash Batch request: Flat Iron Salt (CE w/ yellow FRN)
New knife request: Police 4 Salt!!!

I am afraid I cannot think of 5 Q&As, but I think the diagram idea is a good one. How about enlarged versions of the various lock mechanisms. I find the ones on the :spyder: site do not enlarge too well.

I'm sure a FAQ about Spyderco related things would be usefull...

Like

What is SFO
Who is Sal? ;)
Who is Joyce?
What is the font used in the logo?
What is that small signature on the Manix?
What is that small signature on the Lil Temp?
How old is this forum?

more later...

Hello again

Great stuff! Thanks for all of the excellent suggestions. I now have some ideas to work with.

My site concentrates on Spyderco products so I will attempt to keep the information on the FAQ page as interesting to folk as possible.

Joe

I appreciate your help and the offer of using your articles. A great deal of work has gone into them and I enjoyed reading through the Knife Knowledge last night.

Ted

Some of the more "personal" questions would certainly make good reading and would give new converts a better understanding of the organisation. Thank you!

Regards, Ken

Another FAQ could be:
(I mixed the real and funny ones together..)

Are the lockbar and pivots made from the same steel as the blade?

Which type of steel is used for the stainless handles? (stainless steel :D ?)

Why did I come across this super folders so late?

How many spyderco´s are enough to have?

Can be a spyderco knife used in MBC?

I would like to buy my 1st spyderco, where to start?

What is the difference between Nr.-ed and non Nr.-ed knives?

Regards,
J.

Only questions I can add:

Where is a :spyder: made and why?

Why is the :spyder: I want or bought not on the website?

- Why doesn't Spyderco use surgical steel - I hear on the home-shopping-network it's the best? ;)

- What do all the letters in the SKU (for ex. C81GPS) mean?

- What shows does Spyderco normally attend?

- Will Spyderco make a custom knife for me?

- Little explenation about the current trademark and former patent of the opening hole.

Hi Ken,

Great idea! Ted has some very good ones mixed in with his humorous ones - topics like the "maker's marks", collector club numbers, and which other knives are numbered do seem to come up with great regularity.

The place of the BRK Native in the Spyderco picture is another that seems to pop up fairly often. Why knives get dropped from the lineup, and the way they are selected for retirement is another. For some subjects, like the story behind the Spyderkey, Q, and R, the best course of action might be to ferret out past posts by Sal, Joyce, and other Spyderco staff which answered them, and get permission to quote them.

Personally, I would avoid the "comparitives", almost all of which can only be answered with an opinion, and thus are subject to debate, as much as humanly possible and stick to things that can be answered factually.

Taking Joe Talmadge up on his most generous offer would be a great way to handle many of the non-Spyderco specific questions.
