I haven’t handled other chaparral models but I can tell you that the maple one feels very solid and sturdy. Doesn’t have a cheap feeling to it at all. I was actually kinda surprised at how heavy it was.Salty Dog wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:34 amHi lads, this looks very nice.
For you chap experts, I handled the sun and moon model, it felt very thin and lightweight, almost a bit too much so. Didn't feel like there was a lot of substance there.
Is that just me feeling that way? I was buying a lil native at the same time, maybe I was comparing it to that, unfairly.
Are all chaparrals as lightweight as the sun and moon?
Would one of these maple ones have the same feel?
Thanks

There are differences in the construction of the different Chaparral models. I was IM’ing another member of the Forum about the thickness of some of the models. Here’s a photo of the Sun & Moon on the left, (no liners,) the CF model in the middle, (thin liners,) and the Raffir Nobel on the right, (thicker liners.)Salty Dog wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:34 amHi lads, this looks very nice.

Thanks pokey, this picture is perfect, looks like the Raffir would be to my liking most.Pokey wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 8:33 pmThere are differences in the construction of the different Chaparral models. The Sun & Moon is the thinnest of these three, and without liners, feels the lightest.
Hi mate, I realise now, it was the lack of liners that had it feeling a bit lightweight and flimsy, in Pokeys pic above you can see how thin it is compared to the others, when I handled it it felt like I wouldn't feel it in my pocket, and I wouldn't be able to do much with it apart from light duties, compared to the lil native which is a little tank it felt like that, maybe im wrong with its capabilities.Wartstein wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:15 pmSalty Dog wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:34 amHi lads, this looks very nice.

Hmmm... you see me surprised!
I only have the FRN Chap, I think it is the lightest of the line, and actually is light absolutely seen.
But relatively to its SIZE it is actually not light, but "heavy" and solid in a good way.
Now the sun and moon (G10) model has the weight of a Delica, which is a lot larger in footprint and has also liners (the Para 3 LW also has about the same weight)
The Chap is smaller, and has a thinner blade, but one of the sturdiest builds of any folder I know. Full liners, Steel backspacer, internal stop pin - like a tank. So it is as "heavy" as a Delica, though smaller.
Anyway, I´ve used my FRN Chap really hard, it took everything I threw on it with no problem. I always smile in disbelief when people say it is just capable as a "gents folder" -this thing with its reasonable thin, but strong, superslicey blade is a little outdoor hard work claw. Believe me, I tested it!![]()

I don´t have the sun and moon chap, but I am almost 100% certain that it DOES have liners - and they are nested, so they can´t be seen in that pic and the knife can be thinner! That is excatly how the FRN Chap is done either.Salty Dog wrote:Hi mate, I realise now, it was the lack of liners that had it feeling a bit lightweight and flimsy, in Henrys pic above you can see how thin it is compared to the others, when I handled it it felt like I wouldn't feel it in my pocket, and I wouldn't be able to do much with it apart from light duties, compared to the lil native which is a little tank it felt like that, maybe im wrong with its capabilities.
Your frn sounds nice, just read a review of it and it was very positive.
Im liking the thickness of the Raf model from those pics.
Thanks for the help mate.
Wartstein,
Thanks mate, when im there next time I'll have a better look and feel.Wartstein wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 11:07 pmPokey wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 8:33 pmThere are differences in the construction of the different Chaparral models. The FRN Chap weighs in at 2.1 oz, the G10 (=sun and moon) at 2.3... so it really has to have liners, otherwise it would not be heavier than the FRN version, but still as thin as the latter...{EDIT: And the sun and moon actually has exactly the same weight as the Raffir noble..]
Salty, if you have the chance: Try and handle the sun and moon (or FRN) Chap again: I still almost can´t figure out how you could perceive it as "lightweight and flimsy" - ? Again, the sun and moon has the same weight as a Delica or Para 3 LW, which both are clearly bigger and have thicker blades, so relatively seen the Chap is actually pretty "heavy".. And far from being "flimsy" imho: Try to move / bend handle and blade, they are really rock solid with all the steel involved
