screwed up

#1

Post by rikkitik »

I want to change my clip around, and for the life of me, I can't tell if these
screws are phillips or,(as I suspect), torx. My eyes getting bad this soon? A micro-phillips is no problem but finding a driver in micro torx sounds tricky.
Any ideas? :spyder:

rikkitik,

Mine are all micro phillips, I hope that helps. I'd suggest getting some reading glasses, my eyes give me the worst of trouble, I can't drive without a prescription. Or get an eye exam. Sorry to hear about the poor vision, get that fixed before the knife, you won't be sorry. Cheers.

The other thing I would ask...

Is the clip a three screw clip or the kind that goes through the handle with a barrel nut?

I also think that it could be phillips or torx depending on what knife you're talking about.

The Phillips screws have only 4 points for the screwdriver tip to fit into - the Torx has a 6-pointed hole. A "mini" screwdriver set which has the necessary Torx sizes can be purchased a Home Depot. Most cellular telephone multi-tools also include small Torx bits that will work.

Hope this helps!

Clip screws are phillips, but even to get T-4's is easy. Homedepot sells a good set, with exchangeable bits: T-4,5,7,8,9,10,15, 20 IIRC. Everything you need to disassemble a Spydie, just don't tell anybody :)

Thx for the help to a great bunch! This is a 3 screw clip ala meerkat. I'll be on the lookout at Home Depot. As to my eyes, I do wear prescription glasses for distance/driving only. I have no problem with close work, reading etc. but for some reason these lil screws made me wonder what proof medicine I've been drinking! :spyder:

Most are, but not all - that's why I responded as I did. For example, my Scorpius has 3 Torx-6, not Phillips head screws (bolts) holding the clip on.

The screwdriver set available at Home Depot also includes small Phillips bits so they'll handle both situations.

I finally got a good look...Took 3 double expressos...These have 6pnt Torx heads and a micro phillips might slip and ruin the driver slot. Ergo...(always wanted to say that), I'll be on the lookout for micro-torx.

For those Spydies that have phillips screws the screwdriver I would recomend a #1 Wiha. I have used it on a lot of Spydies and couldn't ask
for a better fit. They also make torx and hex drivers, to go along with the
screwdrivers.

As has already been suggested, if you have a Home Depot nearby, their little HUSKY Torx driver set #HD-74502 T is inexpensive (around the $5 mark) and contains a driver for every size Torx screw I've encountered to date on a Spyderco knife. The Wiha tools are extremely high quality, and their #1 Phillips and #6 Torx drivers would probably be a sensible investment for any Spydeco lover who frequently wanted to relocate clips. On the "down side" they are considerably more expensive and not always easy to find locally.

Many thanks to all and sundry! I just picked up Husky 74502 at Home Depot. Switching the clip around took a hot five minutes and now a great lil knife has moved up to awesome! Kudos to all! :spyder:

You're welcome rikkitik. Since you bought the Husky set I will pass on another little tidbit that may be of interest. Some folks had complained that only three of the bits can be stored in the handle and one has to be mounted at all times. If you feel that way, a member of another forum discovered that you can remove the divider from inside the handle, thus allowing all 4 bits to be stored there.

Thx for the tip. I'll do just that as complete storage will make things a bit better for the tool box.
I was in a hurry at Home Depot but I did notice what appeared to be similar micro driver sets in flat/phillips, and micro nut driver sets. I'll peruse those tools when I have more time. More knives are inevitable, as is glasses repair, dabbling with a shortwave, or replacing a watch battery. :spyder:

I wish I had seen this post first. I just spent 50 bux on a matco set that only has a T5,6,7,9,10 in it. I'm going to the DEPOT now.
