Damascus UK Penknife UKPK - HANDLE OPTIONS

#1

Post by Superfool »

OK guys, we are doing really well on the blade shape poll, so thank you everyone who has put in their vote.
If you haven't been over there, please head on over and vote.

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=87014&sid=9f617f67d ... 3e66e8a83

While that is running, can we all put in a suggestion for the handle please?

Can you please give a FIRST CHOICE, and if you wish, please indicate a second and third choice

I will select the most popular 10 choices, using appropriate weightings of your indicated 1st, 2nd and thirds, and put them in a poll next week.

Please note: handle materials that require liners eg wood, bolsters, and process heavy contouring are not available, due to the effect this has on the costing. This has already been discussed on the main board.

The list is already starting to shape up...
  • Carbon fibre plain.
  • Carbon fibre 3K.
  • Carbon fibre shred.
  • G10 Ivory.
  • G10 Tan.
  • G10 Black with red accent
  • G10 Dark green

I will edit this post to re-update this list as the ideas come in.
Thank you to all of you for helping with the ideas, pictures, advice and general input; this knife is possible due to the positive attitudes and general good nature on this forum.

David.

Id rather it be an interesting 3d contour than any certain type of material.

Not necessarily fluted, but something interesting.

Solid, smooth carbon fiber, preferably contoured.

Shred or marbled, although I'd settle for other types. Just not peel-ply.

Second choice would be smooth G-10, either black or dark navy blue or green.

Shred carbon fiber.

If it has to be plain carbon fiber, I would much prefer 3k carbon fiber (like on the Kapara) rather than plain 1x1 carbon fiber (what most would consider a standard carbon fiber weave) like what is found on the Chaparral.

I got the impression that adding a machining process would up the price disproportionately.

In my opinion, a Damascus blade should be paired with a handle that is elegant, but simple so that it doesn't draw attention away from it. Contoured and polished G10 or Micarta would be ideal and ivory or white would be an excellent choice.

Any type of wood
Wood would unfortunately require steel liners (which has never been featured on a UKPK) so is likely out of the running.

- 3k Carbon fibre like the Kapara. (Thanks for identifying that CF type, Fixall).

- Textured peel ply CF, like the 52100 Millie family.

- G10 (say black with a red accent layer so it looks like a coloured liner).

Hi SDG.

Unfortunately, bolsters and options requiring liners are out of the the question.

Would you like to suggest something different?

Contoured CF would be cool.

Is contoured G-10 (maybe smooth) an option?

Personally I'd love to see a contoured smooth micarta.

Is Micarta at all an option? I think I had read in a thread on this forum that there were some issues with stability/movement from Micarta in folders because of humidity differences and that Micarta requires a liner. Maybe that just applied to knives coming out of Japan and Taiwan though? My memory is hazy.

Maybe Sal can clarify?

If they are really at same costs as G10, then any type of carbon fiber.
