3458 members?

#1

Post by Yojimbo »

I have noticed that we have 3485 members in the :spyder: community! The weird thing is that when you look at the memberslist there are a LOT of people who never post any threads? Are they shy and just read what we type? Or do they just become members and then never come back?

How many of us would be considered as the "active community". A few hundred?

I think it's a "weird" feeling to realise that while you think you are in the :spyder: lounge with the regulars, there is like a enormous glass wall with 3400 spectators watching our conversation! :D

I would say that if you don't post at least once in 6 months then they ought to just delete them. I think it is silly to sign up and then not participate  . All in all I can't say that there is anybody on this Great Forum that I have had any significant problem with. I have also made about a dozen good friends. JD :spyder: O

On several dodge truck boards I frequent, that's how its done, you gotta make at least 1 post a month to stay current. You can lurk without joining, same as here.

page 17/18 out of 113 on the member list seems to be where the end of active members lies.

those of us up on page 1 & 2 have been here long enough and talk too much. :D

Vinny has a point. Just think about all those who lurk without joining.

Also I am sure that there are many who are members that don't even so much as lurk.
First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

If you make a selection based on the number of posts from page 57 of 113 the members have 2 posts or less. These members could have joined to ask a single question or to spam or maybe they collect memberships.

That's an interesting fact that might never change on web-based forums. I recently have read large parts of a uses and gratification study from Stanford University which was done in the mid eighties. Actually they did some research on bulletin board systems which were the ancestors of modern forums.

Interstingly they found out that a large part of registered users were lurkers and did not contribute to the social interaction and only a minority kept on posting on a regular basis. They also sent a questionnaire to every user to find out the motives why they were members of the BBS. The the most mentioned motives are quite funny: ~28 % control of the environment, 31 % personal identity, ~ 28 % recreation, entertainment.

I wouldn't think too much about it because this kind of behaviour is still common and the study is not outdated as one might think. Compare it with a talk show with regular guests: A few keep the program going on and the majority sits in front of their TV-set and watches :D

Sorry for that rather strange post - I know that it might not interest most of you but I've heard a lot about that topic lately on the uni :o

Cheers, Rob

I post mostly when I am at work

I have a weird schedule so I post unregularly
but I come almost everyday and it's always the same 15-20 persons who post

names that come to my mind, Daywalker, LONE WOLF, Worker #9, Hannibal Lecter, vampyrewolf, senate, dialex, FoM, Troll, ghostrider, Rob, Green Cobra, JD Spydo

I'm still holding 500 posts less than Jeff, and about 300 more than Alex... think that balance will be there for a while.

well the way i see it, most of the people that join and dont post are most likely reading what we wrote, and the only reason they register is so that if they ever do have a question or comment, they can share. Personaly, i think that after an account has been idle for a said peroid or time, that it should be deleted. Not saying that if you dont post for 3 days, but like if you were idle for say 90 days? perhaps. Just a thought.

I don't see any real reason for deleting accounts of non posting members.
I do visit a few forums I don't post in much but I still enjoy reading the contributions of others and I do like the possibility to post if and when I believe I can contribute something.

I think you gotta be a member to see a picture attached in a post, that would explain people registering but not posting much...

Yes me too. And as I think about my previous post, you got me to remember all the forums I've joined, still lurk, and never post. :o

We should change this forum in the "grumpy old balding men forum" :D But although we sometimes grump we are getting more and more closely knit.

A Very Warm Welcome!
