CPM REX 86
Carbon: 2%
Chromium: 4%
Molybdenum: 5%
Vanadium: 5%
Tungsten: 10%
Cobalt: 9%
Working hardness up to 68-70 HRC.
I need this steel in my life. Seems to me it falls somewhere in between REX45 and Maxamet. I like what that means for the wear resistance/edge stability/toughness/ease of sharpening spectrum. Generally speaking all of those attributes are a trade off of sorts with each other, i.e when you increase wear resistance, you decrease ease of sharpening, etc. I think this steel would land high on the wear resistance, edge strength side of the spectrum, while still retaining some of the toughness and sharpening attributes of tool steels.
I'd think k390 is the closest steel in production, but less vanadium, more tungsten and molly sounds very interesting.
What say you?

I'm always interested in a new and untested steel.

If only it was available.
T15 will have to do.
You can call the boys at Niagara Specialty Metals with a list and ask what steels are actually available in barstock sizes for knives and you'll see the reality that a lot of these steels aren't available, some are only in round bar.

Re: CPM REX 86
Would it be out of the question to have a vendor forge these round stock bars into flat plates/billets? I’m talking industrial scale forging equipment/process like forging M14 and AR15 receivers, etc., not hand forging.
Otherwise, what are the round bars used for in other industries?

Re: CPM REX 86
We should be asking Spyderco to make more knives in Rex 45 boys.
Stay focused :D

Re: CPM REX 86
Good to know, thanks for chiming in. I'm very happy with my REX45 para 3. I've gotten some of my best edges ever on that knife. I'm 1000% percent on board with more models in REX45. I wish there was a way to get the heat treat on HAP40 done the same way as the REX45, but iirc, HITACHI insists on doing their own heat treats?Deadboxhero wrote: ↑Fri Apr 05, 2019 4:42 pmIf only it was available.

I'm still working on Maxamet. I picked up a Native 5 a few weeks ago, and have sharpened it 3 or 4 times, but I've yet to get a result I'm happy with. I'm going at it again tonight. Wish me luck!

I think too that being a laminate steel, the Japanese HAP 40 is necessarily more limited in HT options (so I've heard.)
Good luck on the Maxamet! You'll get it yet! :)

Re: CPM REX 86
Yeah the Rex 45 is HOT. Sal and the Golden Crew rocked it.
I think we just need more Rex 45 rather than Rex 86.
We are seriously spoiled.
They really pushed that hardness too. Rex 45 really holds up to the "Voodoo" steel nick name given to HAP40 on kitchen knives
Holds a great edge yet strangely easy to sharpen and durability at the edge despite the hardness.
Must be "Voodoo" :D

Re: CPM REX 86
Yes indeed. But now that I think about it, I've heard of HAP40 kitchen knives with higher HRCs, so it must be possible.
Sal, if you read this, any reason HAP40 can't be heat treated the same as REX45?
And thank you Meat man. I'm just going to keep focusing on better technique. If it turns out well I'll let you guys know :). On my third stone atm.

Re: CPM REX 86
I agree, but only if they give the PM2 and Para 3 the same treatment as the Military. I don't know why the Military was run higher(66 hrc) than the other 2.Deadboxhero wrote: ↑Fri Apr 05, 2019 7:06 pmWe should be asking Spyderco to make more knives in Rex 45 boys.

There are still some Rex 45 Militarys out there. From a quick search I found that National Knives, Black Wolf Supply, and Lamnia all have some. There are more places too.

Re: CPM REX 86
Yep, I'm definitely up for more REX45. Like a lefty Millie or Paramilitary, LOL. :)
OK, I'm probably a bit late to be banging the drum for those models in REX45, but Sal and Eric: how about including the lefty Millie at least, in the next Golden Para series sprintrun?
This is one of the few companies where the squeaky wheel actually does get the oil! Sometimes... :D  :spyder:
