EDC - small

#1

Post by seaswol »

I've been using a Toad as my EDC to zip things open and small cuts. I can keep it hid in my hand opening it, using it and closing it one-handed and slide it back into my pocket. I've tried a Cricket but just seems a little too thin. Is there a Spyderco out there with less than a 2" blade that can be handled with one hand? Never have seen any of the ball bearing or "other" new types of liner lock knives.
Thanks,
Chris

have you looked at the meerkat? it has a 2" blade and with a little practice can be closed one handed. fits good in the hand.
then there's the navigator which is almost identical shape wise, but uses a compression lock and a higher grade steel. for little knifes these are very nice.

I'll second the Meerkat - I had one with the Reverse S blade and it was a great little knife for opening parcels and the like and was also a great conversation piece by asking people to close the blade. Unfortunately my wife thought so too and now it is in her collection.

if you want to stick under 2", then the meerkat or cricket are your best choices... small and under 2.5 would be the dragonfly or dyad... 2.5" gets you the dodo...

All depends on your hand size, I love my cricket for opening packaging... pinch, snap it open and palm everything but the tip.

Maybe your looking for something a little more substantial, but how about the Jester? The hole in the blade is larger than the Ladybug and I find it easy to open one handed.

There are a handful of small lockbacks that would work. At the moment all are out of production, so finding one is not always easy. The "ideal", for me anyway, is the Mouse. Ambidextrous carry options, easy one hand opening and closing right handed or left. The others are all set up for right hand clip mounting only, but are still easily opened and closed one handed with either hand. They are the CoPilot, the Pegasus, and the Navigator. A new version of the Navigator is due out in a couple months.

True, but if he finds the Cricket too thin, then he might not be happy with the all stainless Kiwi. The jigged bone is considerably thicker. I love the Kiwi myself and have a fair size flock of them, just have a hard time palming one. On the other hand, folks seem to find them very non-threatening, so keeping it totally hidden from view might not really be necessary.

I have tried all the above knives except the Meerkat and the Dodo. So I''ll bring in one of each. Now I hear there may be a Vielle JR?? To me the Viele is the best small - medium Spyderco unless I am out and about in the rough.
Thanks everyone,

Please forgive me as I know I'm on the the Spyderco site, but this knife used to be a Spyderco...... :)

I agree with the above poster about the Mouse knife.

I received the Mouse Lite as an Xmas present and I think for what he is looking for it may be a solution, and the price is very reasonable. My regular Spyderco Mouse I just can't get myself to carry cause I know I'll lose it or it will grow legs on me as in the other post.

Hope this helps.

Joe

The 2 little Spydies which are currently high on my list are the PE Dodo and the Titanium Salsa. Incredibly rugged and unbelievably versatile for their statute. :spyder:
