For the people that went to blade show, did Spyderco have a sample of any of these at their booth? If so how are the burnt orange handles?

I believe Rex 45 is actually M3-2 +8%Co and not M4+8%Co.https://www.crucible.com/eselector/prod ... title.html
So is Hap 40 https://www.hitachi-metals.co.jp/e/yss/ ... hap40.html

Why have I been thinking Hap 40 was M4 + 8% Cobalt this whole time? ( that would be Rex 54 not Rex 45) https://www.crucible.com/eselector/prod ... cpm54.html

Yes, Rex 45 and HAP 40 are equivalent steels . They both are powder steel variants of M3 -2 +8% Co and should perform alike given similar heat treat and geometry but I have been thinking they were something else this whole time.

Thanks for this post. I've been biting my tongue at all the M4+8%Co references.
I feel that hap40/rex45 have greater potential than cpm-m4. This didn't happen with the Japanese made Spydercos. I hope they don't make the same mistake and leave anything on the table with rex45 heat treat, like they did with hap40.

What's that you say? Hap 40/Rex45 can be even better than the Japanese sprints. Now im really excited to try this out :D I was stoked enough as it is about it being unclad.

Reading all this just changed my view on Rex 45. Think my NO, just went to neutral.

Japan where you at?

Does spyderco ever answer questions about what HRC they are aiming for on a specific steel? Sounds like it has great potential after watching @deadboxhero's rex 45 steel geekout video.

I wish I had caught on sooner though. Yep, I like the non lamination versions too. The steel really doesn't gain anything for our uses from the lamination. We still need to keep the non lamination sections from rusting so care is about the same. As noted it sure scratches easier than the more wear resistant steel. I think they are usually run softer too and that means performance.

Eh, there are some advantages to lamination, the pivot won't rust. The idea is also that they could jack the hardness to 65rc + and the blade will bend when overstressed versus just flat out snapping in half.

It's not a deal breaker for me.

I'm looking forward to Rex 45 and I hope they push high hardness

+1 for lamination in the pivot area. I like clean, dry knives.

I’m not too sure that is indeed the case Shawn.

Don’t forget the pivot hole is still machined through the carbon steel core which is left exposed and ultimately still susceptible to corrosion as is the spine and tang end.

Either ways, laminated or not I treat them all as I would a solid slab carbon steel blade. :)

I'm wondering if the first hap40 sprints (only ones I own) were not run harder because of sus410 laminate ht limitations?.

66.5? Looking forward to trying one out!

Does anybody know what hardness the HAP40 knives were run at?

Just went to preorder through Knifecenter at $188.00 showing discontinued / out of stock now. I thought this was around $140-50 originally?
