Back to our regular echochamber. Spyderco's are good, mmmkay?
Re: Spyderco's Sharpening Equipment
I wonder if cost would be prohibitive? An ultrafine goldenstone might be $100 if not more. That being said, conceptually I'm on board with this idea. A diamond or cbn one would be cool too :DJD Spydo wrote:....
Yes you really do make some great points there "Zrow" especially about the GOLDENSTONE. I do think there are a lot of really intriguing possibilities that they could explore with that most unique sharpening stone. First and foremost it needs to be offered up in multiple grit selections. That alone would make that tool very much desired in the knife community.

Re: Spyderco's Sharpening Equipment
They actually had a diamond version a few years back and they called it the "DUCKFOOT" and why they let it go is another mystery to me  .ZrowsN1s wrote:I wonder if cost would be prohibitive? The only gripe I had against the original DUCKFOOT is that I wished they had it in another grit>> preferably a coarser model. Oh yes an Ultra-Fine GOLDENSTONE would truly have a lot of possibilities to it. Not to mention how super sharp you could get knives in the field without having to set up a 204 Sharpmaker.
I'm just sitting here really confused as to why we are not yet seeing the GAUNTLET. I've heard that there are some interesting ways you can use that unit for sharpening Spyderedges and Hawkbills from what a friend of mine told me who actually saw one on display at one of the past BLADE Shows.
Oh I know that to bring a product to market has a lot of hurdles you have to clear before you can put it out the door but it sure is taking a long time to get the GAUNTLET to the open market. I'm hoping this will be the year. I can't wait till I can get addicted to that unit  :D
Re: Spyderco's Sharpening Equipment
Question JD, could you describe what the gauntlet system will look like? I heard cats eye stones, but that's about all I've heard.

Re: Spyderco's Sharpening Equipment
My friend saw it at the 2016 Blade Show in Atlanta. He did say that it had the "Cat's Eye" stones similar to the ones that were originally on the old Spyderco GALLEY V Sharpening kit. He also said that there was a lot of different types of set up available for other edge types from what he could ascertain and it looked at though you could also sharpen Reverse S blades, Hawkbill blades and even Recurves.ZrowsN1s wrote:Question JD, could you describe what the gauntlet system will look like? He didn't take a picture of it but he said that they had a prototype with some of the sharpening tools on display with the GAUNTLET system. I believe it was about 3 years ago when I first heard of it. From what I've gathered they've had some manufacturing problems and/or distribution problems that they've been trying to iron out. I wish I could tell you more. But my gut tells me that this unit will have more versatility than the 204 Sharpmaker. I'm hoping that it will also have the ability to do a lot of woodworking tools as well.
I do wish at some point Spyderco would give us a target date for release.
Re: Spyderco's Sharpening Equipment
I don't think that "costs" would be that much of a deterrent if they would provide some more information on the uses of the GOLDENSTONE. They really need a comprehensive instructional video to get people up to speed on the overall concept of the GOLDENSTONE and what it's capable of.ZrowsN1s wrote:I wonder if cost would be prohibitive? So far the only grit that they have available for the GOLDENSTONE is "Fine">> I can think of a lot of sharpening jobs it would be good for if there were more grit selections available. Also there was talk about a year ago and I believe Sal himself said they were working on some type of a base unit for the GOLDENSTONE which would give you a lot of different angle options and also give you more control of the unit from what I've been told.
Just like the GAUNTLET I've been patiently waiting for that base unit for the GOLDENSTONE for a long time and I do hope we see it before long. It is extremely interesting when you see all the stuff that is in their product pipeline. I just hope it isn't that much longer because I'm ready for some more toys to play with :D

The Goldenstone is appealing to me for its size and portability. After people see the edge I keep on my knives, they're always asking me to sharpen their knives for them (which I gladly do :D ) I sharpened 2 of my bosses knives last week, he said he loved the edge I put on the knife so much he don't want to ruin it by using it. I laughed and told him I'd be happy to sharpen it again. If I had a Goldenstone I could just bring it to work with me and touch up his knives there instead of taking them home for the weekend.

Re: Spyderco's Sharpening Equipment
I hate to be redundant but I do believe that the GOLDENSTONE has huge potential as a portable field sharpening system. But they've got to make it in more grits and I'm sure they will over time. Because Sal waited for years to bring this tool to market and I'm sure he's not going to let it die an early death.ZrowsN1s wrote::D I hear you JD.JD Spydo wrote: .... Not sure what this Base Unit for the GOLDENSTONE entails but there was some encouraging talk about it a few months back and I'm sure it will make the tool far more versatile. I love mine and even used it yesterday at work and also sharpened two of my fellow worker's knives>> one friend wanted one until I told him how much it costs  But I do think once it becomes more popular then the costs will eventually become more affordable. It probably cost a bundle just to bring the tool to market and the newness of the concept of the tool hasn't really been appreciated as of yet. But I do think that the GOLDENSTONE is very much in their future line up of sharpening tools.
