River/PFD Knife?

#1

Post by atv223 »

I love my Spydercos and carry one with me pretty much anywhere I can carry a knife. I do a lot of kayak fishing and I would really like to replace the Gerber I have on my PFD (personal flotation device), but it doesn't look like Spyderco makes a dedicated river knife as they're commonly referred to. The common features being, fixed blade, blunt tip, hard sheath with attachment to lashing tab on PFDs.

Seems like the closest thing to it is a Enuff Salt Sheepsfoot. Does anyone use this knife like that? Was thinking maybe by this and flatten the edge on the first 1/2" or so if the blade, but I hate to do that to a knife.

Anything in the works for something a bit more river-knife specific?

I'm curious about this too. I'm a kayaker, and I bought my river knife years ago, a benchmade, before I got into spyderco. Although spyderco makes a lot of different rescue knives, none of them seem to have all the design features that you mentioned specific to a pfd and swiftwater rescue.

Hi Atv,

Welcome to our forum.

You may look into the Enuff H1 model. It's already a sheepfoot. How blunt at the tip do you want it to be?

I own the Enuff in H1 and imagine that it would be a great hard use raft/rope knife, but it's not a subtle blade... With its thick spine and Spyderedge I feel like it doesn't really work well for fine detail tasks, despite the very handy size and shape.

If you wanted a "safety" tip, it should be easy to just take the edge off of the short bit of plain edge that's before the first serration scallop, but then it would be even less useful for detail cutting.

Sal, thanks for the reply!

The Enuff seems the closest, but I would ideally like something with a tip like on the Assist or the now discontinued Caspian Salt 2. For me, I carry other knives on my kayak to do common tasks with, the one lashed to my PFD, is for emergencies only, like if I fall over and get tangled in lines. For that I want something I don't have to worry about accidentally cutting myself.

Maybe a spring run of the Caspian in LC200N? :)

Other companies make these type of knives, but they just don't have the quality or materials of a Spyderco.

Hi Atv,

We can consider it, but usually people buying diving or "boat" knives want them to be very inexpensive on the theory that they might lose it. Quality performance knives cost more to build and are generally more expensive to purchase. We've not done well with them enough to maintain inventory.

We have a model in-the-works that was designed by a kayak fisherman, but it has a point. When I'm in or near water (canoe, kayak, sail, snorkel) I carry a Salt but I like a point. I can do things with a point on a knife that I cannot easily do without one.

That makes sense, thanks for the explanation. If there is a sprint run or similar to the Caspian, you can count on me for at least one or two!

You definitely got my attention with this! I currently bring my Pacific Salt, but I'm always up for another knife, especially one with a specific use in mind. I'll be anxiously awaiting a kayak fishing knife.

I do not canoe or anything like that nowadays, but it seems to me that the ARK in a sheepfoot serrated edge would be just the ticket. It is small, easy to carry, and can be clipped on gear or carried around the neck, etc. It would be handy. Heavier knives can get in the way.
