this is something i've wanted to do for a while...i own a p16 i bought new in '93 so it's a canadian one. can you share some details on the conversion? i'm going to assume since it's a 1911 style pistol the new barrel needs fitting? or no? what are you using for mags? never tried to stuff a 10 into the .40 mag, it fit's i guess? this gun would be a great 10mm, built like a tank. i have a steel frame...you too?
Yes, you will need to have the barrel fitted by a competent gunsmith, drop in barrels are hit-and-miss on accuracy. Yes, the P-16 magazines work fine with 10mm ammo. Add a 22lb. recoil spring, heavy firing pin spring, flat firing pin stop, 19lb mainspring and you end up with a dead reliable carry gun with tons of power and accuracy. (I ordered my barrel from Bar-Sto and fitted it myself, all the other parts are off the shelf from Brownells or Midway.)
PM me if you need details.
The 10 mm is quite a bit longer than the .40 S&W, but it is about the same length as the .45 ACP.
As for the .40 supplanting the 10, the 10 will do anything the .40 will except fit in a 9mm sized gun. The .40 can't do a lot of things the 10 can (at least without endangering the shooter as much as anything downrange).
I like the versatility, practicality, and effectiveness of a .357 magnum steel large frame. Semi-automatic pistols are fine, but there's something about a revolver I like and if I could only have one handgun, it'd be a .357 magnum. Brand wise, I like Ruger or Smith and Wesson for a revolver.

For some reason, the .357 Mag just never grew on me. I've had several over the years (I still have a GP-100) but they have never held any real appeal for me. my favorite revolver is probably my Smith and Wesson 25-5 in .45 Colt.

You need to shoot a 686 with a 3 inch barrel. You may change your mind.

Much the same here...357 just never hooked me but I do own 3 GP-100s, one in .357, the other 2 are customs... one a 5-shot .44spl. and one a 6-shot 10mm.
As far as favorite revolvers then it's a tie between my S&W Model 24 .44spl. that is laser accurate and my 1st production run 4in. Ruger Redhawk .44 magnum. glass smooth and has filled my freezer with deer and wild hogs for many years...lol...I tend not to like "normal" stuff.

I have. It didn't turn me on. It may be the high pitched crack of the muzzle blast. I can shoot .44 Mag all day long, but .357 Mag annoys me.
Speaking of glocks, the range i work at is one of the 100 glock selected to try out and reveal the two new models on the 26th. There is a lot of speculation going on to what they might be, a lot of people are saying gen 5, but glock won't even tell us. I'm pretty excited for it.
I'm thinking that it has nothing to do with gen 5 stuff. Mostly because those models are not "new". Our local law enforcement already have them and carry them. The fact that glock is being so hush hush makes me think it's something else. Everyone at the store is thinking a single stack 40 to go along with the 42/43 line maybe even a 45. Really no telling though.
Interesting. I, for one, never understood why the .45 GAP never took off. It had a great street record. O well, new ideas for an old fuddy duddy, set in the ways crowd. The same goes for the .357 Sig. People are still stuck with that 1874 era 38-40 (40 S&W) but the .357 Sig is a newer idea and folks just could not get past the old Indian-Cavalry wars mentality.

I have thought about converting a Glock20 to 9x25 Dillon for quite a while now. Chucking some 147s that is truly stepping on the heals of the .357 magnum.

The GAP failed because it did nothing better than the ACP and shooters who carry a. 45 caliber pistol or revolver don't want to have to spend hours sorting brass when they reload. You really learn to hate the GAP as a reloader. The GAP is also twitchy when you are reloading for it where the ACP is a very forgiving cartridge for reloaders.

Bottleneck pistol cartridges are a PITA to reload and the SIG was too pricey for its market when it was released . And it is also twitchy about pressures when reloading for it. I sold more 40 short and weak replacement barrels than 357 SIG ammo in the first 2 years of its appearance on the market.
Nice concept but just too much hassle for the guys you have to sell to to make it a successful product.

If you have a 43, and an Introvert, overlay the two and take a look at how ergonomics end up how they end up independent of the researcher and bada$$ company making the thing.
I love my 43. I've had a few others, but the 43 is everything I need and more.
I love my lever-action 30-30 for fun shooting, and a 30-06 for distance.
45-70 is my next bullet. Those can stop most things that move.

I love my 43, great carry gun. Still have my 3913 which is also very nice but a bit larger. It's a great point and shoot pistol, very accurate and dependable.

This comment got my attention. I'm not into guns like I am knives. I have a few hand guns and don't feel the "want" for more like I do with knives.
BUT, I've always thought it would be nice to own a .357 one day. They seem to be pretty capable and practical. And I like the idea of being able to target shoot with .38 ammo out of the same gun (and already own a .38 snubby).
So there's a bunch of stuff no one cares about just to say, hmm, interesting! . .44 mag should probably be on my list, maybe in place of .357 eh? Hunting and defense possibilities covered in spades. What about target ammo? They shoot .44 spcl too? Not as cheap I imagine...

you need to reload if you're an intense shooter. although not as cost efficient as it once was, reloading still is the way to go if you want to shoot 500/1000 rds a week. the only ammo that is fairly cheap in my area is 9mm and frankly, that's not what i want to spend my time with on the range. right now i'm experimenting with .357 sig. factory ammo out the door is close to $43 after tax for 50. i need to reload it out of pure economics.
