Do I really need anything more than VG10, S30V, or H1?

really interesting thread and something i agonize with all the time. my knife use is very light compared to most on the site, opening/cutting boxes, opening mail and food prep are pretty much it. i own several spyderco blades but only 3 are daily drivers...a vg-10 delica, s30v para 3 and a h1 ladybug serrated hawkbill. among my meager stash is a hap40 delica and zdp189 3.5 caly but honestly, i've never used them. i'm agonizing over getting one of the new para 3's in another steel but the jury is out on that yet. i'd like to pre-order a cru wear para 3 but don't know if it would give me any more function than i already have with the s30v for my meager needs. it's interesting reading the replies this thread has gotten

I have one "need" and that is for high corrosion resistance on my saltwater use knives. Outside of that, my knife use is pretty mundane like yours. I still enjoy playing with new steels but I get the most enjoyment out of steels that I enjoy sharpening. Hap40 and Cruwear are both a real joy to work with and I love the edge I get out of those steels. I tend to resharpen early and often so I don't notice much difference in wear resistance between steels on my EDC knives so I just buy the ones that I like to sharpen. For that reason alone I would go for the cruwear para 3.

The VG 10 is great! Haven't had a chance to use the 3G. But the VG 10 takes and holds an excellent edge, resharpens easily in the field.

dreadpirate, I'm glad you posted this.
I really could be just fine with VG10, 440c, D2.
I have knives in M390, CPM 20CV, etc but I could do without them.
I like very sharp edges that are easy to keep up and the fact that I'm never far from sharpeners is great.
I don't think I want to be without CTS-XHP, though. :D

you know what? if i don't try it i'll never know. i pre-ordered the cru wear para 3 last night. hope i'm not shut out on this since i'm late with the order. looking forward to trying this steel, maybe i'll get lucky and snag one. :)
