There are TOO many holes on the new Spydies!!!

#1

Post by sod »

Is it just me, or do all the holes for, Tip up, down, right, left carry, ruin the aesthetics, of some of Spydercos most recent designs? I really like both the Manix and the Stretch, but I HATE all the unused screw holes in them. I have other Spydies that are Tip up or down, and I can live with those three unused holes on the “back” of the knife. Nine unused holes six of which are on the “front” of the knife is just plain UGLY!!!
I wish they would have stayed with the lefty, righty, approach as I think this new one size fits all approach not only ruins the appeal of some otherwise attractive knives, but at least to me, it makes them look cheap.
I realize that Spyderco has always been about function over form but to me a bunch of unused tapped holes on my knife provides neither.
Am I the only one who feels this way?

Yes I share your feelings on this one. You ever see that movie holes, that is what some of the knives remind me of. It seems this trend has struck many of the knives out there not just Spyderco.

Don't think it's just you, although I'd venture that the majority does not feel that strongly about it. My tastes are probaby just as strong as yours, but different. There are times I think the best solution would be for Spyderco to have a "pro shop", where guys like you and me could buy an undrilled knife and have it drilled for whichever carry mode the buyer prefers - high ride or low, tip up or down, southpaw or righty, or left undrilled for me.

I see where you're coming from, but, to me, the beauty of a spydie is in its function, and getting its function as close to perfect (for you) as possible, is the goal.

Those holes might look ugly, comrpomising or superfluous, but they are also a representation of the spyderco ethic, form follows function.

Part of the attraction of spyderco is in the value for money. IMHO you don't get more bang for your buck anywhere else. Having one variant to suit four tastes means that they can keep the costs down AND maintain a more varied product line. We're all smarting over this years discontinued models, but there'd be even less to choose from if dealers had to stock two or four variants.

I think it might be a nice idea for some of the higher end models, though.

There are so spydies that should be offered TOTALLY clipless - No Holes at all. I would have given a few buck extra to have the Wegner JR hole-less.

I strongly agree. My father is left handed. My wife is left handed. My oldest son is left handed. They were limited in the knives they could comfortably carry and use. I applaud Spyderco for giving its customers as many options as possible. Its also nice to have more choices available for the lefties out there.

The holes don't bug me. I like the options myself. Just me I guess, I suppose I would just fill in the holes if I didn't like them. :spyder:

I guess your right  this knife would look just as nice if it had six unused holes drilled and tapped into its face

I like them. I am right handed, so I could easily live with a single position clip, but I appreciate versatility. I too am a "function first" man (perhaps that's why I feel better in my BDU's than in a suit). ;)

I like those extra holes, aka "the swiss cheese option", a lot. Then again, I'm a lefty so I'll use them! Aesthetically, I see the point about unsightly holes in SS handles such as the Stretch, but they disappear in black G10.

No, that particular knife, with its right hand orientation and upscale cocobolo insert, would not be improved by additional holes on the face. However, there are probably more that a few right handed users that wish it had three more on the back side. The Pro-Grip in it's normal configuration with the single Kraton insert on one side, is not well suited for left handed users, and ignores the desires of those right handed ones who favor tip up carry as well. The Stretch expands the market by making the knife completely usable to everyone, and that is a good thing, even if it offends a few purists. Which is why I suggest the "pro shop" concept. There are knives for which I would gladly pay full MSRP in order to have one completely free of holes. There are also one or two where I'd do the same in order to have one with a single set in a non-standard location. Come to think of it, a Stretch, with no holes and cocobolo inserts like that ProGrip would probably never leave my hand. :D

Deacon, I've been wanting a Spyderco custom/pro shop for some time. Mainly for drilling lefty holes in existing designs (Dragonfly, Persian etc..), but also for some colored G10 handles and such. I'll gladly pay more for these options.

holes good for a work knife.

If I'm buying a knife for use (most of mine are) then holes are good. I' right handed, but there have been times when for one reason or another I off hand carry. It is nice to have the option. Tip up tip down, little diffrent, but I think it is nice to have the option.

If the knife is for sitting around and looking cool, then I can see why extra holes are not a wanted.

I like the idea about a pro shop...

For whatever reason I am OK with three unused holes.
I own a Calypso Jr., a Mouse and a Chinese Lum all
have three unused holes. For me nine unused holes is excessive.
I guess the good news for me is that Spyderco has many other models to choose from,
although the one that I am most interested in is not currently available!

No, I also think it's more functional. One of my friends who owns Spyderco Knives has to skip some of my favorites because he is left handed. :)

Hello All

I suppose it all comes down to personal choice. I can understand both sides of the argument but as a collector more than a user I would have to say that I could easily live without the extra holes.

Considering the manufacture of these knives, is it easier to produce a “one knife suits all” model? The knife might be more user friendly and therefore more attractive to potential buyers? Whatever their reasons I seriously hope that the “multiple hole system” isn’t applied to all future models. That would limit choice IMHO. :o

I personally don't care very much about the looks of my knives and am more concerned with how they function. I'm a lefty so I very much appreciate all the extra holes. There are several knives I would love to have but have not purchased because they do not have reversible clips such as the Para Military. I can see your point when talking about knives with SS handles but I don't think any FRN or G-10 handled knives are all that great looking that the addition of a few more holes ruins their aesthetics; especially with black G-10 where you can barely see the holes.

Function before beauty!!!
Anyway.. most if not all spiderco knives are nice with or without the hole(s)
It’s even gets nicer when you use it. I own six of them.. and tried many.
I will be disappointed if Spyderco comes up with a knife designed to be pretty first and to be a knife second.
I wouldn’t give up any of my holes - I want to keep my options open - function far before beauty!!!

(According to some of my friends “this knife is so ugly its beautiful”..
and.. I turn them into collectors)
