Didn't know it would patina that is a nice little bonus. Mine has not yet.

I was under the impression you could not have scales made for it?
You can. Almost got mine customized but didn't want to send my knife over.
Very cool.

Hmm now what to go with?
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

I've been using mine to cut up every piece of cardboard or thick paper that's gone in our recycling bin. This evening I tested the edge on piece of receipt paper and it wasn't cutting very well so it was time for a touch up on the SM.

It's plenty sharp now!!! I like how K390 is easy to get sticky sharp. I'm no steel or edge aficionado but, at least to me, it seems similar to M4 or HAP 40 as far as sharpening is concerned.

I wonder if BOOMER52 can do scales for this knife?

However, I personally like the dark grey FRN.

That's how my second one is too. The first one came out easily. Now, what to do? Maybe just let the second patina more naturally? I might try the dowel & superglue trick at some point

In the mean time, here's a comparison of the vinegar patinaed one to the stock one:

I have no idea why , but I ordered one of these today .
It is very far removed from my list of requirements in a knife , but something just said " Get One "

It is a great pocket knife. Do as I am doing. Take off the clip and drop it in your pocket.

as far as differences between the BB Urban and the K390, the tip on the BB version is definitely a bit higher, with corresponding increase in belly on the cutting edge and a flatter spine. Back springs on my examples are indistinguishable, though the half-way notch on the BB knife is a bit "notchier" on closing, opening is slick on both though. If I had to choose just one, it might be the Elmax version, since that's stainless and the edge performance is excellent, though the fine edge on K390 is spectacular...

Neither one is quite up to Ti UKPK standards, but then they're $150 cheaper!

Quick comparison of the BB forum Urban and the K390 as promised....
Image
As has been mentioned previously the tip is slightly lower on the K390 that gives the impression that it is longer and has a thinner grind but the differences in actual dimensions are minor. These next two photos show it most.
Image
Image
There is also a noticeable increase in downward angle on the K390 that won't help with stabbing cuts. I think I prefer the BB in this respect.
Image
The half stop is also quite different (but hardly makes a difference in use) but we knew from Sal that he was putting that at 90 rather than the 85 on the BB.
Image
There's also quite some difference in the shape of the joint notches and back spring so they feel different too. Strangely, they sound very similar on opening/closing though.

I've had the K390 for about a week now, and have forced a nice grey/brown patina with hot tea and vinegar (I took the pics beforehand.) It's a very familiar feel in the hand and mine came very sharp, probably the sharpest i've had out of the box. Very impressed with the edge on the K390 even though it's not as acute as my preferred edges, maybe this steel has something different after all! It doesn't feel as special as the BB knife though somehow. Not sure what it is but i feel like the K390 will be more of a user than the "ooh, shiny!" of the BB Elmax. Back to the drawer for her majesty the BB, and into the pocket for the K390 spanner!

Wow, that really looks great. Are they selling those scales now? I couldn't find them anywhere on their site.

This may be a silly question but is there a reason spyderco doesn't make a lock back version of this knife?

The pattada with polished G10 would be awesome!

The Cat is basically a liner lock version of the Urban.

I always thought the Urban and UKPK looked a lot like a slipjoint Calypso.

Thanks for the info, I think I'd actually rather have a slip joint than a liner lock though ;) That K390 Urban looks good, probably be sold out by the time I can get to it :(

Well, I did get mine, great knife, very sharp out of the box.... And I sold it.
Why? Because it was just a tiny bit too short for me and it sat right at the spot between 4 and 3 finger grip. Also my k390 pingo arrived at the same time and it fits my hands so much better.
Still a great knife and an awesome addition to the slip joint lineup.

As for cuscadi, just contact them, they have way more options and materials in Stock then what is showing on their website.

I first bought this one for the steel but now I'm in love with this little slipit. It's a compact perfect city carry and user. The blade is very thin behind the edge and has a perfect distal taper.Sal, you did it again :cool:This one is among your best designs IMHO :spyder: Please, bring back the wharncliffe Urban !
