Yojimbo clip bent !!!

#1

Post by loki88 »

I found out this morning that the clip of my Yojimbo was bent on the weakest point, where the round hole is. I bent it back, but it is still visible where it bent. I am certain that it will break off soon if it happens again. I didn't do anything specialm with it and never felt it snag on anything. I wonder if this is a common problem, and how i could get it fixed? Should i sent it to Spyderco? :( As this is one of my EDC knives i would rather fix it myself. Is there a heavy duty clip available for the yojimbo?

I worry a little about that problem as well. Not only is the clip significantly longer than usual, that single hole in the clip does leave a vulnerable spot.

Since this is a golden model, maybe they can grab a clip off the assembly line before the hole is drilled and send it to you?

My Lil´T had the same problem with the clip. I prefer the oldstyle clips since they have enough material to be bend back in shape a couple of times at least...

I didn't buy a Yojimbo because I felt like that clip was too weak.

Just hope i'll get some feedback from "the bug" how we can work this out. I hope i don't have to send the knife back to Colorado, and that this "flaw" can be solved.

I am sure, that Spyderco will be able to sent you a clip for a couple of bucks and you can change it yourself. I haven't had much of a problem with the clip on the Yo, but I bent the clip of the Lil' T pretty bad.

To all:

The original design and the handmade plastic concept model that I submitted with it both had a wider clip. For whatever reason, this was changed in the first production run. When Spyderco expressed concern over the strength of the clip, I suggested that they go back to the original specs. They have and all current production has a wider, stronger clip. This should also mean that they have clips in stock and that they are in a position to help you guys out. I suggest contacting them directly and requesting one of the new replacement clips.

For the collectors out there, the narrow clips won't be coming back (hint, hint).

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn here. Anyone from Spyderco care to provide a more authoritative solution?

Stay safe,

Thanx Mike.

Sorry guys. If you feel the need to replace the clip, please let us know and we'd be happy to get the new clip to you.

Hey Sal u don't have to apologize, the introduction of a new knife is always a learning proces for manufacturer as well as customers, and i am shure that all us Spyderco lovers out there feel the same. We are just "street testing" the knife and this sometimes stirs up unexpected problems. Not every aspect of knife usage can be duplicated in a laboratory or during the design phase.

I wonder isn't there an R&D program where u lent prototypes to user trying out new designs to filter out the bugs? I know some manufacturers sometimes do that to a small WELL selected group of end users.

I know there is a possibility on BF but this is only open to people from the States.

And Michael, great knife, still love it dearly even with inherent problems with mass production. If i had a custom Yojimbo i would be tempted to put it away as a collectors item and this isn't fair to the great design. :D

Metal that gets bend beyond a certain point is permanently molecular damaged (plasticity border). If u bend it a lot it will even break with a stress fracture. In my case the clip got bend severly and i was able to bend it back. But as the bend created a soft spot in the metalstructure a lesser force then initial will cause the clip to bend again on the same place. U can repeat this proces till the clip breaks off! As i see my Spyderco knives as wearable object d'art i like to keep them as "new" as possible. I don't mind normal wear, but a broke part on a Spyderco makes my heart bleed! :)
