Weak Detent on K2

#1

Post by snaphaunce »

I bought a K2 from KC shortly after the design was discontinued. I like the knife a great deal and while it is generally too big for my everyday life I carry it occasionally. I have used it for some food prep but nothing terribly rigorous. What I have noticed lately though is that the detent is relatively weak compared to some other spydies I own, to the point where I can dislodge the blade and sometimes open it by holding it and pushing away from my body (no hand contact on the blade or lockbar). I'm not terribly alarmed but I will admit that when I pocket it I'm mindful of the fact that the tip down only carry config means the tip is pointing somewhere I'd rather it not be were it to open in my right pocket. I don't expect Spyderco to service it as the model has been disco'd and it is a relatively minor complaint, but should I be concerned about the issue getting worse or change some habit in how I carry it? Any other K2 owners having the same issue? I have tried cleaning out the detent hole to make sure there is no lint or oil interfering but that doesn't seem to be the cause of it. I'd be glad to hear your experiences.

My K2 is fine.
The 10V is beyond awesome imo.
Will Spyderco not service this knife?
I cant imagine so. That being said I would at least call.
The K2, imo, is the last knife you really wanna get cut bad with...

Not sure that I understand your description above but if I hold my K2 and give it a sharp downward shake the blade will open. I consider it a little weak for such a large blade.

I'm sure Spyderco would service it.

I was trying to describe more or less the same thing that you are doing, forgive my poor description of it. Good to know yours is the same. Have you ever worried about it? I'm wondering if I may be more concerned than I should be since this is my only folder of this size/weight.

You're probably right, but the more I think about it the more I wonder if it's just a quirk of the design.

Agree with you that the steel is fantastic and while I dunno if this is the last knife I wanna get cut with, it sure ranks high up on the list :D

I doubt I will ever carry the K2, I got it more as a curiosity and because the design is seriously cool  but the amount of effort it takes to shake the blade out on my knife is still enough to give me confidence that it wouldn't come open in my pocket during "normal" activities, however if I took a fall or similar I would be cautiously checking it as I have recently had a heavy fall with my Military and it did open in my pocket.

I went and tested a few knives I EDC and surprisingly a couple of them shook open with less effort than my K2, and with normal carry I haven't had them open in my pocket.....

I'm probably just getting myself worked up over nothing then, thanks for shaking a few others. It's a really neat design but it sure isn't something I want to pull out in front of strangers so mine also pulls drawer duty most days. Every time I pick it up it almost makes me wish that the plans for the smaller version hadn't fallen through in the way that they did.

I put a few wraps of gutted paracord around the handle near the lanyard hole. It puts a little bit of pressure on the face of the blade and increases the detent doing so. I have to resize the picture file and its a pain on my phone but if you go to the spyderco picture gallery and search k2 handle you can check out the pictures I uploaded a while ago. Definitely recommend it.

I am sure Spyderco will honor any repairs. I'm supposed to get one of the last K2 knives from Knifecenter sometime next week and although I don't own it yet I would liken it to what Texans call a BBQ gun. This is in most cases a highly engraved 1911 with highly engraved grips, Brought out for show for a Sunday BBQ social. Now the K2 is not that Glamotious but like a BBQ gun it's mostly for show and rarely if ever used for any action. As much as I would like to use mine like the BBQ Gun will only come out for show on Sunday's even though it's capable of so much more...

Or, more likely, a quirk of having a ball bearing the size of pin head and pressing into a shallow depression as the only thing retaining a long, heavy, blade. Gravity and inertia do the rest.

I don't think it matters. I've carried the K2 quite a few times with no issue. If I try hard enough, including getting a solid, hefty wrist snap, I can get the blade to drop open as far as pictured. It's not something I can do every time, unless I really put my whole arm into it. Without the inertia of the wrist snap, I can't get it to open at all.
