PM2 Lock Rock

#1

Post by camporama »

After 1 year of carry, I noticed that my PM2 started to develop some vertical blade play, even when the lock is touching the other liner. Should I worry about it, or just keep using the blade without sending it in for repair. Also, the stop pin has tarnished/rusted.

Same thing happened to me. I sent it in, they said they fixed it in the note I received, but the play was definitely still there. I still use it, but it's just a little frustrating. The rust on the stop pin usually comes off pretty easily. Maybe soak it in WD-40, and try rubbing it with a Q Tip

Edit: After reading that again, you said your lock was touching the opposite liner? If so, that's your reason for the vertical play. There's no more room for the lock to "wear" on the tang, so it develops a bit of lock rock. If you haven't disassembled the knife I'm sure they could replace your worn lock side of the liner

Thanks for the advice Matt. I think I'll wait until after the holidays to send it to the warranty department.

I am curious how this wear occurred, if it is wear. I carry and use my PM2 a lot, and have now for 3-4 years, with negligible wear on the lock, despite plenty of sharpening of the blade. I wonder if this lock wear might be related to many opening and closing cycles that are unrelated to cutting operations? Perhaps there are other in-use stresses at play that my knife doesn't encounter. Thanks in advance for any information that may help me understand the syndrome being reported.

I've never seen a Para 2 with 100% lockup, so I'd say it's pretty rare. I have 3 of them, and it's never happened to me. The OP could try rotating the stop pin, and it should create a earlier lockup.

Bill, I haven't really used the PM2, but I have carried and occasionally flicked for the last year. Matt, I have already tried rotating the lock pin, and the lockup did not change.

Sorry for the bad pics, but I can see the detent ball hitting the other liner when it is locked open. I can't push the liner over any more. It was only oiled with mineral oil.

When I purchased the knife, it was at about 75% lockup.

I would try sending it to W&R. That seems unusual that the lock would bottom out that fast. I've flicked my Para 2s thousands of times, but have never had this happen. I've always been interested to see what Spyderco would do in this type of situation. Keep us posted.

Send that in. I have owned many Para2s and seen even more and have yet to see one with lockup that late. I have one Para2 that was my only carry knife for a couple of years and it has barely worn at all. I have never seen one come out of the box even close to 75%.

I hate to ask but did you purchase it from a reputable dealer?

It was purchased directly from amazon, and it has all the correct markings and the G10 around the lock cutout is rounded. It passed all of the tell-tale signs of being a fake. I'm definitely going to send it in after the Christmas shipping. Thanks for the advice everyone!

A friend of mine has two counterfeit PM2's. They look very good but the lock and pivot work poorly. I try to educate him about how counterfeits damage Spyderco, but he just doesn't grasp the point. It will be interesting to learn if the one from Amazon was a fake. Amazon has a lot of fakes for sale, much more than just knives. They need to clean house.

From my research, it isn't a fake. The lanyard tube is chamfered, the cutout is rounded, and it doesn't have any of the flaws that were associated with a fake.

Also, I read on BF that you should be ok as long as it was direct from Amazon, and mine was.

Thanks for your input!

Thing with Amazon is that someone could order and receive a legit PM2, then request a return and put a fake PM2 in the box. Amazon will not inspect the knife that throughly and back into the system it goes waiting to be shipped off to an unsuspecting customer ordering direct from Amazon. I would like to have faith in people not to do this sort of thing but it happens.

Definitely send it in to W&R. I've never seen a compression lock that far over.
