Code on PM2

Hello forum,

Last years I bit the bullet and bought the all black PM2. Black blade, black G10. I wanted that knife for a long time and found one on Ebay. After convinced it had all the features of a genuine Spyderco I bought it and I really like it. I am not new with PM's. I had a couple of first generation PM's and one sprint PM2 before. It is all I know of a real PM. G10, the steel, edge retention of the s30v, the sharpening etc.

One thing keeps bothering me. I know the Golden-knives have month and year of manufacturing on the tang. Like 02-12. However my black PM2 has more symbols in the tang; 09-14 AR R.

Can anyone explain the AR R to me?

I think it's just something extra they added to help the fight against counterfeits.

Have you disassembled your knife? That date stamp is normally hidden and can only be seen with the blade removed from the handle.

The datestamp is hidden under on the blade-tang around the pivothole on the usual place. The steel behaves like I know s30v, the bladeshape perfectly looks like a real PM2. The steel is nicely flat ground, ricasso and visible engravings and jimping look genuine. The lock and G10 seems genuine. The lockindent in the handle is assymetrical with one rounded corner....all seems to check out genuine. Just the AR R engraved with the datestamp........ :confused:

I pull lots of Spydies apart and they began adding this extra coding to the blades in the last year and a half or so. What the codes mean? They know, and my guess is that they alone will continue to be the only ones that do. Pretty sure it's nothing more glamorous than a little extra bookkeeping for their stock parts inventory.

Thanks, so it is 'normal' these codes. Mine look similar, in the same fashion.....

All I really wanted to know if this coding was normal or regular, and it seems to be. That makes that I am now completly convinced this second market purchase was a genuine PM2 and not some knockoff. Thanks again.

At one point didn't we all theorize it was likely the machine, person that produced that blade?
