I'd be in for a Jazz Delica in Hap40.

Sorry, I really kind of meant what everyone thinks of the concept in the original post and any ideas how to improve it.

If it's something that's a little too expensive for you I understand but so is the nirvana and rubicon, etc. I'd hope to get a top quality, little out of the ordinary knife. A "nobody else can really come close to touching this" kind of knife. Especially for the discerning spyderco fan. This is the kind of thing even custom makers can barely touch because of the materials and coating and reputation, along with a solid warranty. It'd be worth every penny of $300. ****, even maybe $400. And if someone couldn't afford it, well, there's a lot of knives that sell that are out of the price range.

I know spyderco can produce absolutely top shelf knives. I'd like to see them step out of the "keeping up with the joneses" thing and produce something no one else can. A forum knife would be a great platform to test a melding of modern and classic with absolutely top notch materials. It's already a knife made in the US. The materials aren't all that hard to source. It'd just require above average QC and a small test market. No real retooling or material Spyderco hasn't already proven it can knock out of the park with the exception of the stabilized buckeye.

I really think the market is hungry for this, even if it doesn't know it yet. More than bearings and flipper tabs and solid slabs of titanium.

I wish someone with some artistic ability could render up a color drawing of what I suggested in the first post. I sure can't.

Yes. Always looking forward to a new Form knife, regardless what it is.

Is it necessary that there be text on either blade or handle that declares the chosen knife to be a forum knife?

I'd think not. Those who get the knife know for sure it's a forum knife and any sales on the secondary market would probably know, too. I'd think a nice certificate would suffice. Personally if I got a knife like this it'd be to use and if I was able to show it off I'd not hesitate to mention why it was made. Doesn't need a banner. Maybe a small etching somewhere that said "2017" or whatever. But nothing massive.

Yes on the Forum knife....but how about in an attempt to make it more affordable for the masses, maybe the stabilized wood with bolsters, possibly Superblue or Hap40 on say a Dragonfly or even Manbug.....similar to the G10 version.

I actually think the addition of both front and rear bolsters would require some fairly extensive (and expensive) retooling to get made. Also, if the buckeye burl hasn't been tested by Spyderco, I would imagine thats another necessary step before it see's production. I'm not doubting Spyderco's ability to pull it off, but it just seems a little bit ambitious. It really would make a beautiful knife if completed though.

Two steels I have been seeing requested a lot lately and that I would go for are Lc200 or hap40 for a forum knife.
Agree with no native also.
More CBBL please!

As far as the OP's vision of a forum knife goes I'd have to say no thanks. I'd be plenty happy to see another forum knife though.

I've said it before but I really think the UKPK with an interesting steel would be a nice fit. Made in golden, affordable, lightweight, classic Spyderco design. Could be a good way to introduce a slipit to folks who wouldn't normally carry a non locking blade.
Most recently acquired: Military 2, Paramilitary 2 Tanto x2, YoJUMBO, Swayback, Siren, DLC Yojimbo 2, Native Chief, Shaman S90V, Para 3 LW, Ikuchi, UKPK, Smock, SUBVERT, Amalgam, Para 3 CTS-XHP, Kapara, Paramilitary 2 M390
Grail Paramilitary 2 M390 X 2! ACHIEVED!!

Well, I'd like the Delica wharnie in HAP 40, goldenrod yellow, with a small 2017 etching (nothing large, taking away from the knife's looks). Of course, it'd be a user, so I really hope that color comes anyway later.
- best wishes, Jazz.

But that's the thing. There are plenty of FRN/G10/whatever that are available for the masses at all price ranges. There really are no production knives like the one in the OP on the market. Sprint runs abound that are affordable to the masses. Regular production runs are plenty available. But for something special, something unique, something different needs to be done.

People can handle only so much peel ply carbon fiber or FRN or whatever. The market really is saturated with high end stainless steels. Shoot, everyone is doing M390 or 20CV or S30V or whatever. Spyderco can absolutely handle something of this magnitude, no reason not to try it and see, especially as a forum knife. The market is really shallow when talking about high grade tool steels, especially with a high quality coating like DLC from Ionbond.

The one thing about forum knives I never really understood is that they don't really seem any different or more special than anything else being offered. I'm trying to get something BETTER than what's being offered and at the same time get something on the market that's not produced by spyderco or anyone else. Another manbug with hap40 or another wharncliff delica with some upgraded steel just doesn't seem like it's a worthy endeavor. Not when something much bigger can be done. And if some people can't afford it, that sucks. We all have things we need to compromise on. I really wanted a nirvana but I wasn't willing to compromise on the fat saber grind. I wanted the rubicon but I wasn't willing to compromise on the S30V and short stubbiness of it. We all compromise. Or we don't. Some people that's price, some design, or some just don't like foreign countries producing it. The PM2 produced in the US with high grade handle materials and the latest and greatest wear resistant US steels and coatings that truly enhance corrosion, what is there to dislike?

I get Sal and everyone else being worried about the price but if something like a nirvana collaboration can be done to high standards at a decently high price, I'd think that a home brewed spyderco design with the upmost top quality materials and QC could be done and be successful. I wanted the nirvana to be much cheaper. I wanted a different blade design. But spyderco produced something really great and what I wanted as a single person didn't matter. They pushed the envelope, albeit in the same vein as everyone else is trying to be in. Now Chinese manufacturers are producing knives with equal quality as the nirvana for about half the price. Good luck with them producing something like I suggested for half the cost. Not in a way that Spyderco could do it, anyway.

In my opinion a Forum knife should be an everyman's (or woman's) knife, it's fine to stretch that definition a bit to allow for exotic steels or cosmetic differentiation, but a $250+ knife would make it too exclusive for many members.

I like having an engraved blade with the year and issuing forum's name or logo.

As far as the next forum knife, I think a PM3 or Wharncliffe Delica is most fitting, I'd be OK with no forum knife in '17, since I'll already be buying at least four of the new releases, more likely six :P

The Sprint Caly 3 in HAP40 has given me hope that an upgraded steel variant of the Kiwi 4 might sneak in to the Sprint production lines some day soon :D but I don't see it as a fitting forum knife, at least not this year.

Agreed! I like the idea of having something different but priced reasonably enough that the majority of the forum members can afford it and will want to actually use it.

I bought a 40th Anniversary Native and it's beautiful and all but it spends most of it's time in the pouch because I tend to grab something that I won't worry about actually using. I also have the 2013 & 2015 Forum knives and I carry those more because they didn't cost very much and I have no hangups about using them.

Me too! I usually like a cleaner look but I have plenty of knives with nothing extra on them. I think they did a nice job on the 2015 Forum knife. Not too big of script yet it still has something on there to commemorate the year and the forum.

I think the idea of a super deluxe Para2 is a good one. I for one am still hoping that the fluted CF and fluted Titanium Para2 come to fruition. If something even fancier came along I would certainly buy it.

The thing with the forum knife is that most want it to be as accessible as possible and making it a very expensive and unique knife makes it quite exclusive. Last year many members suggested a UKPK as a forum knife so that even people who live places that don't allow carry of locking knives can carry and enjoy a forum knife. I think that one of the reasons why the Native is often chosen is to make it more inclusive. I would love a Military forum knife but that leaves a lot of people out.

A BIG yes to this. Even if not a forum knife. :spyder:
