cat questions

#1

Post by JasonC6612 »

Is it possible that the Spyderco Cat marked "bd1" could already have? I bought another one due to losing my last one and I noticed multiple things. The barcode does not touch the numbers, the paper I recieved with it looked like a copy made of an original copy (large black line going down page as if it were copied with a copy machine, and I'm very paranoid :( I don't have the money to send it to spyderco anytime soon :, (

Could someone give me any info? It look fine, works fine but the barcode just threw me off after hearing about that from youtubers...

Can someone from spyderco tell me if the new bd1 cats have a barcode that doesn't touch the top of the numbers? Is it possible that fakes are already being made of the bd1 cat? Wasn't this an unannounced change? It was made November 2015 because the box says KO. does this sound possible to have fakes of a newer version of the cat?

First off- I may be wrong, but I don't think anyone's bothered with making a fake Cat....Certainly not one of the newer BD1 (yet- never rule anything out from those faking so-n-so's)

Secondly- the change to BD1 was announced late 2015 in the Spyderbyte (either Nov or Dec) so it's entirely possible you got one of the very first ones.

Without seeing the paper it's hard to tell if it's 'off' or not.
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

I wouldn't worry much about the paperwork or the barcode. I just looked at the barcodes on some of my small boxes and none of the codes touch the numbers, including the box for my 440C Cat.

As Demoncase noted, I don't think there are counterfeits out there of the Cat models. Never say never but if the quality is like your previous Cat then I wouldn't sweat it.

Enjoy your new knife!!

Where did you buy it? I plan to order a cat soon, from either BHQ or KC.

Love the Cat. I have mine next to me now as I type. I would not think this is a fake, especially if you got it from a Spyderco authorized dealer.

What's the blade centering like on the BD1 cat? I have a 440c and the liner lock pushes the blade right when closed.

Oh my! It's been awhile since you asked that! I'm sorry. The blade centering is slightly off to the right. I've tightened the pivot as tight as I would allow and the blade doesn't really budge. I just left it as is. It's such a great knife I don't mind it. As a matter of fact, I just checked my bd1 cat. You were 100% right about it being the liner lock pushing it! Interesting...
Awesome attention to details you have there lol.

I'm definitely not insulting the knife... it's a beauty as much as it is a quality knife. My favorite knife out of all that I own. I sort of want a 440c cat now. You know of any major differences between the steel?

There is not a lot of difference, but the BD1 does have a bit of vanadium.

My Cat had blade centering issues and didn't lock up without blade wiggle, even when the pivot was *very* tight. The solution was removing the polymer washers and replacing them with metal ones (I used brass washers from the hardware store, because I didn't have any phosphor bronze washers in the right size). The result was *much* better lockup and no blade play.

I still like other knives in this size class better than the Cat, but for the dollar it's a really nice little knife... once you replace the washers!

BD1 is easier to sharpen than 440C in my experience, though the 440C does hold the edge a bit longer.

Does your Bd1 cat have bead blasted liners? The liners of my cat are a matte gray. I would assume its bead blasted

Mine is 440C and the choil and the ramp have jimping. The liners are satin polished and match the screws and pivot.

OR maybe its just the BD1 models... who knows? lol It's like a rougher nearly non reflective finish (if I aimed it into light, I see no reflection of the light). It's a dark gray color (pivot, liners, screws) yet the blade itself is satin finished. Very interesting..

This is easier than explaining. See the pivot? The liners also have that finish.

My Chicago BD1 has the same finish on the pivot liners and screws as in your picture.

The Cat has undergone quite a few variations since it was re-introduced. It would be fun to collect all of them. The ones I know of are:
440C 1] jimping on choil and ramp, satin polished liners 2] no jimping on choil and ramp (not certain of liners) 3] I think I read someone who had no choil jimping but did have ramp jimping, but I am not sure of this.
BD1 1] no jimping, bead blasted liners.

Does anyone else know of other variations?

Hi everyone,
i may be getting a little obsessive compulsive about it...at least in the pics, the spidey hole seems a lot closer to the top edge, compared to, say a Dragonfly 2.:
