Domino vs Mantra

Post by elena86 »

For those who had the chance to use both help me decide to purchase just one.I handled both but I didn't get to use them long enough to decide.Comparison pics, if there are any, would be most appreciated.

I have 2 Dominos but no Mantra. Looking forward to the comparison. I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

They're both good. I don't have a Domino, but I want one. However, I'll probably still prefer the Mantra: thinner and lighter (both by a decent amount), I prefer the all-Ti handles to the glass-weave CF but YMMV, and I definitely like M4 a LOT. XHP is good, but I like M4 more. Again, YMMV. I also think the Mantra is a better-looking knife overall. The Domino is a bit chunky for me. Again, however, I still want one, because it's still pretty good. My plan is to grab one and get custom scales installed or get the blue G10 version.

Great knives, I have both. Today the Domino is in my pocket. Different beasts though. The Mantra disappears in your pocket and is much slimmer and lighter. The Domino is more noticeable in your pocket and has a wider blade when cutting which can be good or bad depending on what your doing. The Domino flips open with authority. The Mantra flicks well but it's a softer click when deployed. I'm glad I own both.

I have a Domino and a Mantra 2. Although I really like the M4 that comes with the Mantras, I prefer the Domino overall. I prefer the way the Domino flips open. I prefer the size and feel of the frame and scale on the Domino. The Domino has bearings in the pivot which may make it more or less attractive to you. Now that I own both, if I were to buy only one knowing what I know now, it would be the Domino.

Just to make sure it's out there: The Mantras also run on bearings. :D

I have both and prefer the Mantra. Both are excellent but for me it comes down to size. I love how the Mantra disappears in my pocket and the Domino is just a tad too wide in pocket. The domino has a slightly more comfortable handle but only because the flipper tab on the Mantra sits just a hair too far back with the blade open. That tab does bother me a little, but not enough to prefer the Domino over the Mantra.

Have to go with the Mantra. Both nice knives but I like the all Ti of the Mantra more than the G10 of the Domino.

Another vote for the Mantra. The Domino was nice, but just felt overly chunky to me, especially compared to the Mantra.

I also have both and prefer either Mantra over the Domino. While the Domino is also great knife, it is heavier and doesn't carry as well.

I think it depends on you. I love the mantra. Have a dice, not the domino, which is also really cool. Mantra is like a flipper delica. The domino is like a flipper sage. Both good. What do you like?

I found that the Dice is a little bit too small for me to flip comfortably. With Domino/Mantra/Southard/etc. I don't have to really think about where and how I grip the knife, but with the Dice if I don't get it just right it doesn't work very well. Is that similar to your experience? Anyone else?

Marius it looks like you are in the same boat I am in. There are no stores where I can handle any knife I am contemplating purchasing. So you do your due diligence in the research department and then sometimes buy both. Knives are very subjective. What feels comfortable in hand and looks good to one person can be the exact opposite for the next person. Others opinions will shed some light on positive and negative attributes but until you get it in hand and use it you will not be able to see if it works for you. You'll probably end up with both anyway.

I have not had this issue, but I mostly use the thumb hole. I have heard that the dice doesn't flip as well as the domino (or mantra) and I would agree with that. Maybe the short blade doesn't have enough mass to get the flip all the way. All said, the dice is one of my go to knives when I'm going to areas with strict knife laws and I like it.

This was my theory as well. It's ostensibly the same action as the Domino, but maybe not re-tuned enough for the smaller blade. When I first handled the Dice, I definitely didn't like the flipping action. Now that I've owned flippers and had more experience with them, I have a better time with the Dice's action, but only if I place my hand correctly. If it were a little better, and re-tune a little, I think it'd be a great knife. Or yeah, maybe just take off the flipper tab.

For collecting, and for aesthetic's, the Domino is one of my favorites, a beautiful knife knife that feels great in hand also...but for an EDC the Mantra is fantastic, I usually carry 3 knives, a large, a medium, and a keychain...Mantra has been my Medium almost constantly since it dropped...only getting small breaks when dress up requires the positron.....At around 200$ the domino's too pretty.

Don't have either Mantra, but sure do love my Domino. Eric Glesser knocked it out of the park.
