Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
The D'Allara Rescue is my favorite backyard deforestation tool. The serrations are identical to the Pac Salt except on a straight edge and in VG-10 instead of H1. There may be a little difference in the edge angle too, but what makes the difference to me is the perfect ergonomics of the D'Allara handle, which, in my case at least, completely fills the hand and enables you to cut with more power. In my yard there's a constant battle with the escaped small leafed privet that grows over the US southeast. I've mentioned before that with the D'Allara you can easily sever inch-and-a-quarter limbs in one slice if you bend them and cut into the bend. Thicker ones can take two cuts. Also, my Pac Salt blade edge seems to roll a little during a stint of this kind of work, but I've never noticed that with the VG-10, which seems to hold its edge better. But I would like to try the Jumpmaster and Aqua Salt at this.

Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
I use a CE Millie and SE Tasman almost exclusively for yard work.
The Tasman gets used for almost everything you mentioned and more, the beauty is i drop it in the shower and it is clean when I am done after a days work. Drop of mineral oil in the pivot and it is good to go. It is also a fantastic knife for veg and cut flower harvesting.
The CE millie is less corrosion resistant but gives you a delica's worth of plain edge and a Dflys worth of Serrated in one package. Lightweight easy to clean and maintain.
I have used some others which were up to the task. A CE Delica helped me with all my cutting tasks during the build of a 900 sq foot stone patio. My PE Para1 has seen a lot of use outside but is lacking teeth which I find really helpful.
If I was in the market for a new yard knife (outside of my current ones) I would be looking at a SE Salt most likely pacific sized.

Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
I'm about 600 miles from the nearest ocean, and when I go to the beach it hasn't been a problem to just not take my pocket knife in the water, so I've always passed over the Salt line.
The comments here make me feel like I need some serrated H1 anyway, especially the "mini pocket chainsaw" description of the Aqua Salt. Sounds like that or the Pacific could assist around the yard with extreme prejudice. :D

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, decided on a fully serrated Pacific Salt with a satin blade finish. Been wanting a Yojimbo 2 for the longest time, think I'll just bite the bullet and order both this week.

Although I'm a bit late to the party, I'd also suggest the SE Harpy (SS) for an all-around yard knife.

Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
By far the best yard knife I have is the S110V lightweight Manix 2, bar none, hands down. If I need to saw through something, I have the right tools for that job and anything I would try to cut with a SE H1 Salt knife is no match for the S110V Manix either. My CBBL is also full of fiberglass insulation goo from using it to cut that as well. It's just an awesome tool box/yard knife!!

Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
You certainly won't go wrong with the SE Pacific Salt, and IMO you'll also find the Yojimbo 2 to have many great utility applications around the house and shop. It would be great if you can come back after you use them awhile and let us know what you think about them.benben wrote:Thanks for everyone's suggestions, decided on a fully serrated Pacific Salt with a satin blade finish. Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
Great thread so far! Not trying to derail it here, but I, too am in need of a yard knife. (live on 4 acres which requires tons of maintenance) I also swim ALOT in the summer out at the lake, beach, etc, and although I wont be using this as my bait knife, would the Pac salt be to big to ride in the pocket of some board shorts. I like the idea of being in the pool with a knife in my pocket. I have never owned a delica, but I love my endura, so I just cant see myself liking the Salt 1 over the pac salt.. What do yall think?
Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
The Pac Salt is essentially the same size as the Endura -- the handle is a hair shorter and a hair wider toward the back, but the Pac Salt lacks liners, so it's actually lighter than the Endura. Pac Salt, 2.9 oz and Endura, 3.2 oz. So, if you can use the Endura in board shorts, the Pac Salt ought to be even better.mrtodd777 wrote:Great thread so far! Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
Salt I is great, but I'd pick the Pacific over it any day.
weighs unperceivably more, but feels much sturdier and the extra blade length is very handy for most tasks I encounter. That's at a very Slight price increase, very much worth it IMO.

Both carry well in shorts, swimsuit, underwear and IWB, I can tell from experience.
I'd only go for the Salt if around sheeple or there's people nearby who might get scared (like in a pool or beach)

Re: Help me pick a new yard knife.
I was talking about the Pacific Salt in the post before last, not the Salt; I just omitted the "Pac" after the first mention. Sorry about the confusion. The weight I mentioned was that of the Pacific Salt (I've edited for clarity).
