Now's The Time: For A New Hawkbill II

No this isn't the thread I had going about 10 years ago for some of you who might remember with a similar title :D But we have heard so little talk this year about Spyderco's great line up of Hawkbill blades that I thought it was high time to see what you all would like to see in a new model or revamped older model Spyderco Hawkbill blade? I am such a big fan of the Harpy and Spyderhawk both that I just can't be content to believe that even Spyderco couldn't take their standards to a higher level for their great Hawkbill blades.

I believe it's high time we discussed the possibility of a new Hawkbill model or ideas for a totally revamped version of one of their old standby models. With what we all know and with what we would ideally like to see in a Hawkbill model maybe it's time to discuss what an ideal Hawkbill could be like if you could alter the ones you've already used up till this point. For instance I would like to see a Spyderhawk with either a G-10 or Carbon Fiber handle>> or maybe a Harpy with either a titanium handle or a newly revamped G-10 Harpy>> because I personally like very sturdy handles.

So many of you over the past year have said how nice Hawkbill blades are for yard, gardening and landscaping work>> and I agree because I've used my Hawkbills for those types of jobs. I also believe Hawkbill blades are great for many outdoor and sporting uses as well. So what would you all like to see in a "New Spyderco Hawkbill Folder"?

Since I recently lost my Merlin in PE, I've been looking about for a replacement. I would prefer a Delica 4 with a hawkbill blade to the Tasman, but the experimental wharnclif Delica also has my interest.

I think that a Spyderco pruner would be great. Victorinox sells an affordable purpose built pruning knife. Victorinox makes very thin blades so I would hope that a Spyderco pruning knife would also use very thin stock with a thin grind.

A Dragonfly Hawkbill could be a good pruning knife if it had a thinly ground blade made out of very stainless steel. I think a flat ground plain edge vg10 hawkbill Dragonfly could be a great pruning knife.

There was a thread about a year ago about doing a sprint run of Harpys. I would like a PE Harpy for garden work.

I'd like to see basically the Superhawk blade shrunk down and put into a Dragonfly handle. Maybe a little more hook if the handle will allow for it, but I'd love to see it done in FFG.

OK Evil D I will support that Dragonfly Hawkbill if you will also support the resurrection of the Superhawk but in full Spyderedge this time around?? I also want to see some new Hawkbill models with high quality handles. Again I'm still amazed at how well the Ladybug Hawkbill has done on the sales charts. And I believe that a revamped Harpy and/or Spyderhawk with G-10 or Carbon Fiber handles would make them much more attractive to buyers.

Oh yes the one Brother mentions the MERLIN ;) I too had a fondness for the MERLIN model but let's go with a titanium or G-10 handle this time around??

I would be 100% in for a SE Superhawk. I never understood why it didn't happen when that knife was still in production, I guess the whole decline in SE sales made it too risky.

I'm also still interested in a reverse S in a Dragonfly. I think for such a small knife that may be a better idea.

I'd love to get my hands on a new production spyderhawk PE and any good blade steel will do. I use the tasman for literally everything and only thing I don't like about it is it's quite a bit smaller than my hand.

As far as blade steels go though, I am curious how difficult a high carbide steel hawkbill would be to sharpen.

Dream Spyderco hawkbill? I say stone washed, ti handle, RIL and a SpyderEdge. LC200n or H1 and it'd be the perfect boat knife but I'm not picky, any decent steel will do. I'd buy one, **** put me down for two! :spyder:

as I said on BF...adding a +1 to the smaller Superhawk size, but still wantig the bigger original one to return

To all of the above comments...
+1 on Spyderhawk with G10 handle

Image

+1 on the Spyderhawk with black handle scales

Image

+1 on the return of the Superhawk, never could get one of those. In H1 SE, even better!

Image

+1 on an H1 reverse S blade, like the Matriarch, Lil' Matriarch or Civilian, or the Superhawk in SE H1 itself

Image

Image

Image

Pull cuts are ideal for those tasks, that I do almost daily

Image

They are great beach/sea knives, mainly for ropes, cutting fibrous material and opening food bags or plastic envelopes, as well as ripping open plastic containers and bottles, or netting

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

They cut like the dickens, flesh, roots, fiber, cloth, etc.

Image

serrated H1 is awesome for all my needs, and I dig that it's so easy to maintain and sharpen

The Salts are true working blades, as are Spyderco's hawkbills. I'd like to see more Sprints of older versions, as I am fine with their current offerings

Sprint SuperHawk with some sort of carbon steel blade gets my vote.

Id be cool with a Dragonfly sized one . I've had the Merlin and still have 2 Blue PE Spyderhawks ( one still nib) what I don't care for is how much blade sticks out of the handle . I seldom carry my user one anymore .

I have two USN Ladybugs Hawks . The serrated one gets a lot of daily use right now as I carry a YO 2 that I keep, the factory edge on . It's super easy to carry , but a Dragonfly would be more useful at a still easy to carry size .

This knife was before my time but I don't see why we can't get a similar blade in a Ladybug. I'm down with a full hawkbill too but this may be a bit more versatile.

Don't let this one die. More hawkbills!

Id love to see the new G10 Harpy come to pass, same blade steel and everything is fine by me.

I also love the idea of the hawkbill Dragondly, though as Evil mentioned, the reverse S might be an even better fit. Could help keep the blade tucked into the handle and a trim overall profile.

Yes, please more hawkbills. Large ones and yes small ones for those that want them.

How about a Hawkbill that has the standard Hawkbill shape but with a little "flair" thrown in, its hard for me to translate it into words but something that is both smoothly curved AND has a semi-triangular angle to it, all in one, with serrated edge and some excellent FRN or other handle.

What would be the purpose of that?

The purpose would be two fold:

1 Looks and aesthetics; an interesting design blade shape that combines the standard curved hawkbill with something like a mix between a Hawkbill and a Wharncliffe, that is what I was getting at. A Blade shape that combines the hawbill with the wharncliffe type blade.

2 It would combine the functional practical cutting power of the wharncliffe and the hawbill into one hand held package.

What I want you to do is picture a mental image in which we have the Spyderco SpyderHawk combined with the Spyderco Yojimbo and you get the basic idea of what I mean.
