First of all, the Military will do anything you van reasonably ask from a folder. The Military has some features which, to me, makes it stand out from the average utility folder. Due to the excellent flat grind, the Military is an excellent folding chef's knife. As a student I am regularly invited to dinner at a fellow student's house. Student houses over here rarely contain a good and clean knife, so I can always pitch in with the cooking. The Military's handle design offers immense versatility, you can choke up on the knife for delicate and fine tasks and make use of the busk for heavy duty tasks, even light chopping or so I've heard. The Military is also a very good defensive folder: reliable lock, little chance of your hand slipping onto the blade, handle allows for gripping at the 'end' or busk extending your reach in a very secure grip.
The Military is big, though. It's not too big for carrying, mind you. The Military is relatively thin, allowing for very comfortable IWB carry, some forumites have expressed discomfort with the Military when carried in the front pocket. The knife is big enough to scare ' the sheeple' so to speak, which is mainly due to the visual appearance of the wide blade and large handle, so keep that in mind.
Plain vs Serrated? For allround medium to heavy duty cutting tasks, and/or defensive roles I would recommend the serrated version. That tends to stay sharper longer. You'll need a sharpening system for serrations, though. A 'Sharpmaker' will make that quite a mute point. I favor the plain edge, it is more suitable for foood preparation and all around daily light to medium AND heavy duty cutting chores. A properly sharpened plain edge can do much a serrated edge can do. Cheers,

Goodbadugly,
Welcome to the Forum.
Mr. Blonde gave an excellent description of this knife. I'll add that you will not regret owning a Military model. It is a pleasure to use. I to prefer the plain edge but, that seems to me to be solely a personal preference.
I do not know what your experience with knives is. If you are uncomfortable with the large blade on the Military you should try something like a Delica or Dragonfly w/ stainless handle. These are great to learn how to be comfortable with a pocket knife.
Take care,
stu
