EDC and the general public

#1

Post by Marty_E »

Today I carried my new Delica 4 with me. I always carry a knife, but until recently my knives were of the non-clip type. The Delica 4 rides high and mine is orange so it's noticeable. Several people asked me what it was and I just told them it's a case for my reading glasses. Thankfully that satisfied their curiosity. How would you folks handle a situation if someone ask?

I'd tell them it's a pocket knife. If they were a beautiful woman I'd ask if there was anything else they noticed while staring at my pants -_-

But seriously, I would tell them the truth. If it bothers you, third party deep carry clips are available. I actually prefer my FRN Delica without a clip because it rides too high for my liking.

I usually just tell them its a pocket knife. Most people won't freak out unless they see you whip it out and flick it open. But of course, you always have to be aware of sheeple ;)

Stranger: "What's that in your pocket?"
Me: "Oh didn't I tell you?"
Stranger: "No."
Me: "Probably because it's none of your business."

Or if I knew them id say it's a knife. But most people who know me know it's a knife ;)

All good advice, but I live in a nanny-state, Calif. Need I say more. :D

Before all this polical correctness I would have just told them what it was. I hestitate to do that today. It could be blasted on FB in an attempt to ban yet another freedom.

I live in one of the most liberal towns in America also in California. I have carried a knife everyday for 30 years and never once has anyone asked me what was clipped in my pocket. If they ever do I will tell the truth and tell them it is a knife. It seems kind of weird to lie about something you really do not need to. Stand up for your rights and do not cower, certainly do not cower on Facebook. They are coming for your freedom and how you are acting is just what they want.

I'm in CA as well. I've never had an issue, even when using it in public. People exaggerate the uptightness in this state.

As some of the others stated, I live in California as well. Most people could could care less about what's in your pockets. I dropped my knife once in the mall and some people backed up wide eyed staring at it, but that was the only instance where people were "afraid" of my knife.

Unless it's prohibited where you are.... why lie at all? That just seems a little silly to me. It's just a pocket knife.

Where I live just about everyone carries a knife so usually its more like "hey what kind of knife you got" than folks freaking out because I'm carrying a knife,

Did I teleport into a parallel universe? Feels like I have within the past decade at some point. Maybe there is a Multiverse

in my country, the traditional 'balisongs' are more notorious and its what people grew accustomed to as a lethal weapon. even when folded, it sticks out your back pocket like a sore thumb. clipped pocket knives, even as big as a millie or resilience are generally not noticed unless you flip it out non-discreetly in public with the shiny satin blade and all.
my blacked-out pac salt never get noticed as much as my satin stretch whenever i open them up with local sheeples around.

I also live in NorCal. I live just outside the SF Bay Area & drive into Silicon Valley to work. Besides work, I spend plenty of time in the Bay Area. Carry everyday with the exception of when I need to get dressed in a suit. Thankfully, wearing a suit is rare for me. I was planning on getting a gentleman's knife for those occasions soon but think I'll hold out for the Sage 5.

A couple of times people have asked and I've told them it was my knife.

I'm in Los Angeles county and always carry two Spydies clipped to my pockets (one in the left, one in the right) and have never been questioned by strangers about what's in my pocket, even when the top of my bright orange Military is poking out. The only people to inquire are my friends, and even then only to ask what knives I happen to be carrying that day. :D

I don't find any issue with carrying a knife at work. A few people regularly carry, and those that don't will often ask me if I've got mine to hand. Nor has the type raised any particular comment, for example when I first had my UKPK one guy just commented on how light it was, and that it was made in the US (I guess we're all used to made in China stuff). Maybe attitudes in fairly rural Scotland are more practical.

The people who know me, know my habit of carrying knives. I prefer avoiding that people notice I am carrying by using deep carry clips, matte finished when possible or carrying IWB (In the waistband)

I also do this. However I found out that people are far too absorbed in their own world here to notice it. I`ve carried an Emerson Super CQC 6 for a while just to test it out. Nobody said anything altough some had to have noticed.

Hi Marty, when I first started reading this thread I was a bit shocked as I was having a hard time believing what the US had become. Having read the responses of most of the folks on here though, (many of them from California) I get the feeling that maybe it feels like a bigger deal to you than it actually is. You are just carrying little pocket knife. Don't get silly with it at work and flip it around like a ninja or anything and I'm sure no one will care. Most folks are way too self absorbed to really give a damm whats in your pocket.

I wouldn't be concerned about it if you are following local laws. Its a tool, plain and simple.

I would, and do, tell them it's a pocket knife. Again if you're obeying local laws, which you should in general.

The delica is a great carry size, it doesn't look intimidating and I actually think the orange works in your favor. I often carry orange/burnt orange/red (blade swapped) You're not trying to hide it. Like those ubiquitous yellow box cutters.
