Hopefully not EDC-ing it for a specialized OFFENSIVE cutting tool. Lol when I read that you asked how that knife could ever be an edc and I laughed. Every day butt kicking knife lol but I agree, how? Great knife though!!JD Spydo wrote:The GUNTING??!! Are you serious??!! And I'll start out by saying that I personally love the GUNTING and have owned 5 of them overall but at no time did I ever consider the GUNTING an ideal EDC type blade, nor did I ever carry one as an ideal EDC folder. To me the GUNTING would have been the last folding knife I would have expected to be mentioned on this thread. I say all of that because mainly I consider the GUNTING to be a highly specialized, purpose driven model designed for very specified uses.RexGig0 wrote:Perfect? No Spyderco is perfect. Had I the skill, I might be abe to make the perfect EDC knife for myself, but it would not, likely, be perfect for anyone else.
Having said that, the Spyderco Gunting is quite close to the perfect folder for me. The handle shape and size are the best I have found, for my left and right hands. (My hands are not identical.) The lock is very well-done, and well-situated so accidental unlocking will not occur. The ramp, which allows "kinetic" opening*, is certainly a nice option, and an important part of designer Bram Frank's intended technique for using the Gunting, but if it had no ramp, the Spyder Hole would be sufficient for me to consider the Gunting my perfect folder.
I must give honorable mention to the Ronin and Temperance fixed-blade knives. When I no longer have to wear a uniform at work, due to retirement, or change of assignment, a fixed-blade knife may become my true, and favored, all-day EDC.
Now I have in the pasted gone on record saying that the GUNTING would make a great Sprint Run>> but do keep in mind that it is a highly specialized self defense blade designed by Bram Frank solely for use in his specialized self defense training.
The RONIN and the TEMPERNANCE 1 models I 100% agree with you there. But seriously could you expound more on why you deem the GUNTING to be an idealic EDC type blade  ?? And I mean all of this in a friendly way I can assure you :)

Endura 1 with the plastic clip was close .
Re: Your favorite spyderco that you believe is perfect
I wonder if Sal intentionally designs spydies to be ever so slightly imperfect so that we'll never stop hunting for the perfect model!
For me it would probably be the Delica, although the Dragonfly 2 is a very close second.

PM2
Droppoint UKPK
Urban
FRN Native5
The new Stretch when it will be produced in FRN might join these ranks
The Sage5 will likely be my first Sage and might join as well
The PM3 is/will be my perfect EDC and I guess it is also somewhat in between of the PM2 and the UKPK.
(would also love a droppoint UKPK with a compression lock..
)
I live in an urban environment so usually these blades will do (with a multitool on the side) but at times I prefer to carry a SE bigger blade as well like my Pacific Salt or my CE Military, the Mili being one of my favorite folders but generally a bit big for urban carry.
In general I don't believe there is one perfect knife since it depends on what you might need it for, sometimes an Urban is ideal and sometimes a Military is much needed. So this is my list of favoritest and perfectest Spyderco's for now.. :)

PM2...
If the blade to handle ratio was improved by removing the extra handle length at the lanyard hole, and if they lined up the left and right side lettering with raised line at the choil...
Perfect lettering alignment

Almost perfect alignment

PITS.
Perhaps another one, if I would not live in Germany. But so, the PITS is perfect for me.

Re: Your favorite spyderco that you believe is perfect
Minus the ramp, the Gunting's blade is a perfectly normal 3" all-purpose blade. The handle fits my hands better than any other folder I have ever encountered. It really is that simple.JD Spydo wrote:The GUNTING??!! The ramp serves as a guard, in addition to its designed purpose of enabling kinetic opening. A guard is applicable to doing heavy work with a knife. The ramp does, however, present some challenges in carrying the Gunting, to prevent snagging on things, and unintended partial opening.
The act of kinetic opening is definitely correlated with using the knife as a weapon, but the ramp, itself, does not relegate the Gunting to weapon-only status, in my opinion.
Re: Your favorite spyderco that you believe is perfect
I respectfully disagree with the "offensive" part. Bram's teaching of the Gunting is very much defensive in nature. If a knife, itself, can be deemed offensive, I would think one would want/need six-plus inches of blade length, to ensure reaching the important bits from a variety of approach angles. Of course, even a box cutter can be used offensively, but is not optimal for offense.JasonC6612 wrote:Hopefully not EDC-ing it for a specialized OFFENSIVE cutting tool.
