If you bought this knife from a shop in town, would you expect that shop to pay for your gas to drive your car back to the shop for an exchange? It's no different shipping it back to Colorado, it's just a much further distance.

Sounds like your solution right there. Especially if you don't plan to keep the knife.bitbyte wrote: BladeHQ will send me a tag for free return... because it mistakenly got through QC and shipped defective.
Good luck though!
Re: Burnt Orange Drangonfly 2 lock rock
I understand your issue with the principle of paying the $6 to send it back...but I can tell you this: if you suck it up and fork the money over, you'll likely end up a lot happier than if you return it to BHQ and end up with no HAP40 DF2.
Re: Burnt Orange Drangonfly 2 lock rock
So you have options and information and you're still not availing yourself of either one, and spreading negative information about Spyderco to others. This is why Yelp can be so useless; people are more likely to review something if they have a negative experience, and the customer isn't always right. There may have been a problem with the QC on your knife, but I can't be mad at Spyderco because you don't want to fix it by the method that a large number of production companies are likely to do. Good luck on your future gear purchases; I hope they're all up to snuff.

"I don't make the news, I just report it". If they had done something positive instead negative, I would be praising them as loudly as I'm criticizing them now. I agree with your premise in general, however I'm not one of those people.
I'm not the type of fanboy that is typical, where they think that their beloved company can do no wrong. For me, when I recommend a company as much as I've recommended Spyderco over the years I hold them to a higher standard... Not a lower one.
I've never, ever had a company based in the US insist that I pay to return an item for repair that showed up broken.
I guess part of me hoped that someone with an interest in seizing an opportunity to make things right would read this. Sadly that hasn't happened.
I plan on availing myself of the options I have, despite being disappointed by them. At least BHQ is willing to step up. Either way Spyderco will get this knife back without me paying for it. The difference is whether they lose the sale... However small it may be. They won't be able to resell the knife as new once I return it. So in the end it will cost them more than they have saved. I can do little more than vote with my wallet. Which won't include me finishing out my plan to purchase all of the DF2 variants.
There's really nothing more to say... There's no point in belaboring this further.
I appreciate your input despite the ill intent. Don't shoot the messenger bud. Peace.

Hmm, being principled in this case will get you no knife and apparently some hard feelings.
Allowing that a company might not send a call tag for a knife that they didn't sell directly to you (maybe direct to BHQ from Spyderco, possibly through distribution), could potentially get you a warranty replacement of that (totally awesome!) knife for a net price still around $80 including the s&h back to Spyderco... the suggested list for the knife is $115, so $80 still looks like an OK deal to me.
Note: I paid about $110 total for my first HAP40 Delica, which had very uneven blade lamination, I kept it and have no regrets.
If you're going to play hardball on this one, I'd ding BHQ for not offering to set aside another HAP40 'fly for you from the next shipment to exchange for your defective one... if you're going to ask for favors, why not go big

I've not really discussed my options with BHQ apart from putting them on notice that it's defective. They briefly alluded to the fact that they would be willing to replace it if they had any, and that they have more on order. They also made it clear I could return it with no problem. I wouldn't be surprised if they might be willing to send it in for repair on my behalf, but that's pure speculation on my part.awa54 wrote:Hmm, being principled in this case will get you no knife and apparently some hard feelings.

Im considering asking for the very thing you just said. At this point I'm not really sure I want this knife any longer. There's enough bad energy involved that I'm a bit put off by the idea of owning it. There are already hard feelings.
FWIW I'm already into it for almost $80 because I paid to get it shipped via priority mail.
Thanks for thinking outside the box tho. Much appreciated.
I'll sleep on it and further explore my options tomorrow.

Re: Burnt Orange Drangonfly 2 lock rock
I totally get that the disappointment of getting a less than perfect knife and then having to pay an additional charge (or wait) to remedy the problem stinks, but don't lose sight of the fact that this is a limited run knife with fantastic high performance steel... For me the hassle would be worth it for the result.

I'd bet you that $80 that they put it back in a box and sell it to someone else. Maybe that's just my cynical side coming out.
This shipping thing...I'd like to point out to everyone that when I sent my Stretch in due to this exact same issue, when they shipped my replacement knife, it came with my shipping cost in cash in the box with it. So, it didn't cost me a penny for the replacement.

I recently got the Burnt Orange Sprint run. It's my first D2 with FRN although I have G10 and Nishijin models.
I noticed the new one has lock rock which appears to be caused by the blade moving on the pivot when open and locked.
Is this normal with the FRN models? Nether of my other D2s have any lock rock at all, although they have liners which should have tighter tolerances than FRN.
Thanks
Re: Burnt Orange Drangonfly 2 lock rock
I can understand the frustration. It cost me a lot (shipping from Canada + insurance) to get my defective Sage2 replaced. I wasn't lucky enough to get my money back. Didn't sour me on Spyderco but a couple of free stickers would have been nice.
I would have taken the free shipping option if it was available to me. I don't care much if I miss out on a sprint.

Hi bitbyte,
We apologize for your disappointment and have provided an option to make this right. I understand your choice to stand firm on principle while continuing to post your frustration in hopes of forcing a change in our decision. It would be truly great if we could take everyone at their word. It would be fantastic if everyone had the conviction that you do to the principle of being honest. Unfortunately, that isn't the world that we live in. That fact is proven almost daily in W&R.
We evaluate every knife / situation individually once we receive it in W&R for evaluation. Our goal is always to take care of the customer in the most fair, honest and transparent way. Alas, we do not always receive the same in-kind. Spyderco can't absorb the costs associated to the untruths of others. We're not saying that you are being anything but honest with us. Regrettably though, there have been enough people who are not honest that we can't blindly believe everyone who contacts us. There have been enough people who unknowingly purchased a counterfeit and then expected us to replace it for them.
We wish it were different. We wish the principle of honesty was one that everyone would stand firm on. We wish the Golden Rule was something everyone lived by.
If you decide to send your knife into W&R we will evaluate it and provide you with the fair, honest and transparent service that we are known for.

There is nothing more important than this one day.
Re: Burnt Orange Drangonfly 2 lock rock
If BHQ will take the knife back with no cost to you then I don't see why there is any problem at all. I've had a QC issue with a sprint run knife that I decided to send back to Spyderco. They did everything that they could possibly do to correct the problem, but they could not replace the knife because there were no more in stock. I could have returned the knife to the online store but the small amount that it cost me to send the knife in was not a big deal to me. I understand your disappointment, but with the options to return the knife I don't understand the bitterness. It would be very easy for Spyderco to start paying for return shipping for W&R issues. This would result in a need to pass this cost on to the customer by raising prices. I like the way that Spyderco does it now so that I am not paying for all of the illegitimate returns each time I buy one of their knives. I know that there are other knife companies that are very "generous" when it comes to their products. The fact is that you have already payed for that "generosity". OP, I understand your frustration and you're free to do what you want, but I hope you can look at things from the companies perspective.

I fully understand the logic behind the policy. As I stated I can prove that the aforementioned situations aren't the case. I even said that I'd be fine with paying to ship it in IF after evaluation it was deemed to be a QC issue and then refund my shipping. Which I think is perfectly reasonable.
I also understand that you have to work within the stated policy. In my opinion, particularly in customer service instances, policies are guidelines. Someone has the ability to make exceptions. I posted in here in hopes of finding that person.
Because of the region I live in, the vast majority of my purchases are online. I've NEVER encountered a situation where an item showed up defective and the company wanted me to pay to ship it in for repair/replacement. Despite the fact that it was their stated policy that warranty repairs had to be shipped and paid for by the customer.
If Spyderco wants to blindly stand firm on policy, then that's certainly their prerogative. They are certainly not obliged to make exceptions, even if I think it would be the ethical thing to do.
An additional part of my concern is that if I send it in for repair and you aren't able to repair it I'm then stuck with the knife because the return period from the vendor will likely have expired by then. At that point I'll have no recourse whatsoever. This, of course, would be the situation regardless if Spyderco paid to have it shipped back or not. So it's not really part of my dissatisfaction, but it's still a concern.
Again, thanks for taking the time to respond.
Re: Burnt Orange Drangonfly 2 lock rock
If there is a QC problem with the knife, then Spyderco will give you options. In my case they offered to send the knife back, refund my purchase price, or give me credit to purchase another knife through Spyderco. In all honesty, it probably would have been easier for me to have just returned the knife to the place of purchase and you definitely have that option.bitbyte wrote:...

Re: Burnt Orange Drangonfly 2 lock rock
I can fully understand the OP's disappointment with the pocketknife, but cannot really sympathise with the expectation of preferential treatment. Sorry.
It wouldn't be such an issue or dilemma if it wasn't such a desirable sprint run item. There must be a glib moral saying that fits the situation, but I can't think of it.
