Any info on taking apart a sage 3 bolt lock?

Hello All,

I don't know what I was cutting but something got into the lock and now it is sticky to the point where the spring isn't strong enough to push the bolt into place for either opening or closing. Does anyone have any experience in taking this knife apart?

I would use high pressure water and try to flush it thoroughly before considering disassembly. Usually warm water, soap and actuating the lock repeatedly will do the trick.

Agree with what Lance has recommended and if that doesn't work personally I would send it back to the mother ship for inspection/repair.

I agree with the other guys. Taking a Spyderco knife apart will void the warranty. Best bet would be to send it to the SFO and have them take a look (if washing thoroughly doesn't improve the issue).

I will try some hot water and oil to see if i can fix it. I have taken apart Manix 2's before with success. For the manix I seem to manage to get moisture on the inside of the blades where the ball bearing falls into the slot of the blade and it starts to rust. I love spyderco but their ship and return times can take a while to get your knife sharpened and I doubt they spend the time to buff the rust out but I may be mistaken. If they do a full cleaning and removed all rust and other spots on the knife I would probably go that route. Do they do this?

I believe they might be willing to do that (regarding the rust). I have sent them several Spydercos over the years for basic refurbishments--such as re-profiling serrated edges, regrinding broken blades, buffing scratches out of SS handles, etc. I believe they charge $25 for basic repairs. However, I would first suggest calling or emailing Charlynn in Warranty and Repair and inquiring about this specifically.

I have taken almost every Spydie I have owned apart. It is just who I am. I know I shouldn't but I do anyway. The Sage3 was one I left alone. The scales will come off easy but the knife does not want to come apart past that.

I don't recommend taking it apart but I have seen at least one youtube video of a Sage 3 that was disassembled.

I have done it. Its really not that bad just make sure you don't lose any small parts. It takes patience to get back together. Gravity is your friend.

Listen to Darby on this one. I've taken apart dozens of Spydercos and many Manix 2's and am very comfortable in my ability to do so. That said, I wouldn't dare try to open up a Sage 3. :)

I agree with the others here who advised not to take the Sage 3 apart as there are a lot of steps...Here is a video of reassembling one, but for some reason, I can't seem to find the disassembly part. :confused:

Man, that was a great video timlara, I'll tell you what, if I had that knife there's no way I would even try taking it apart after watching that, he sure knows his stuff though that guy seemed quit knowledgeable.

Yeah, after clicking through some of his other videos, I see he's a knife maker, so that explains his fearlessness I guess...Definitely looks like more than I'd want to take on as well, so if I ever have a problem with my Sage 3, I'll just drive over to Golden. :)

Okay I will not touch this knife. So far steaming hot water and a really good oiling has cured my issue for the moment. If it doesn't work I'm sending it in. I am officially afraid to touch that knife.
